Alperrik

Senior Practical Adept, Elector

Practical Adept

Adept Alperrik is a senior Farisian Practical Adept in the Tirza / Heron Hill district who becomes one of Mirkandar's most useful (if accidental) social patrons during Minalan's undercover stay in Farise. Alperrik is a "self-important" senior magus whose provisional approval acts as a social commission among the Farisian magical elite β€” once you're welcome at his parties, you're welcome among the Heron Hill set.

He hosts the lavish "wife's birthday party" where Mirkandar first turns heads with his apparently effortless production of wine-chilling ice. Alperrik's reaction is the most quoted line of the scene:

"Then you must stop it! The last thing the rest of us need is honest competition! What will that do for our profession?"

β€” Alperrik, on Mirkandar's icestones (Practical Adept)

Later, when Alperrik's reception for the new Electors features Ruderal as Mirkandar's plus-one, Alperrik delivers his other signature line, both self-deprecating and oddly proud:

"Always room for an ambitious young adept. I've taken nine apprentices myself, over the years. Eight have become competitors, so far β€” don't they know they're supposed to journey, as journeymen? Away?"

β€” Alperrik to Mirkandar, on apprenticeship (Practical Adept)

Although the "I'm not political" refrain in the book actually belongs to Mirkandar himself, Alperrik's entire character is positioned around something close: he is the host of choice for Electors who refuse to commit to either Count Cingaran or Rellin Pratt. Minalan describes him this way:

"Alperrik was, indeed, more invested in the process than the outcome, and was therefore unlikely to take a side easily. That attitude had attracted a number of Electors who were therefore uncommitted to either Cingaran or Pratt β€” myself included, I realized."

β€” Minalan on Alperrik, Practical Adept

His friend Darriky is less diplomatic, summarising the man with affection and exasperation in equal measure:

"He's always liked me, and I think he's trying to burnish his credentials as a common mage by hosting this thing... I think he's enjoying this. Gods help us all if it lures the man into politics. He's a boor on the best of days."

β€” Darriky, on Alperrik (Practical Adept)

Alperrik's function in the Farise arc is structural rather than dramatic: by being the man whose parties everyone attends, he becomes the unwitting hub through which Mirkandar networks his way into the Congress of Electors. He is later named an Elector himself, "to his own surprise" as much as anyone else's.
