Warmage, protégé of Terleman
Anjak first appears as Terleman's personal squire, leading a frontier patrol on the Magelaw's eastern border when Lord Cleston's raiders sweep across and seize him along with the rest of his lance.
The Lord of Cleston, mistakenly believing the Count of Wilderhall has declared open war on the Magelaw, demands four hundred ounces of silver to ransom the men back — and another hundred for “dear Anjak.” Terleman has Pentandra contacted via mind-to-mind; his answer is unsentimental:
I told him that the Lord of Cleston could expect a visit shortly. You see, they didn't realize that I have three thousand men in the field, at the moment, because knights are too stupid to properly scout.
— Terleman to Pentandra, Hedgemage
Anjak is beaten badly “as a lesson” before Terleman recovers him. The Clestoni knights are not executed afterwards, but the ransom price Terleman extracts is high. The episode firmly establishes Anjak as Terleman's personal stake in the Magelaw's eastern marches.
By Marshal Arcane Anjak is fully Terleman's aide and bodyguard, riding at his side as the Magelaw goes to war against the rebel Tavard and the necromancers at Darkfaller.
That was the benefit of an alliance with a strong and valiant young man like Anjak. His protégé had caught his eye for his achievements and his boldness, not his fair face or muscular form. Nor had he tried to use his relationship with Terleman to his advantage, as a woman might. Anjak constantly strove to impress him and be a good companion — nothing more.
— Terleman, Marshal Arcane
If not a sworn Andrusine, Terleman and Anjak had formed an intimate bond that confounded his political enemies and stymied the womenfolk of the kingdom into frustration.
— Marshal Arcane
Anjak rides into the muster at Sevendor in his own armor, already prepared, and asks for instructions:
“Any final instructions, Viscount?” he asked, brightly. He was already armored and armed. He did not need inspection.
— Anjak to Terleman before Darkfaller, Marshal Arcane
Terleman's standing order is brutal: protect his back while he directs the battle, and ensure no fallen Magelaw comrade falls into Nemovorti hands. Anjak salutes and trots back to his squadron without comment, then walks through Minalan's newly-built stone archway into the necromancer city alongside the Marshal Arcane himself.
At the post-Darkfaller wedding reception Terleman delegates the heralding to him; the “handsome young lad” reads out the assembled magnates and their accomplishments with a magically-augmented voice, naming Pentandra “Ducal Court Wizard, Baroness of Vanador, Defender of Vorone, who defeated two Nemovorti and directed the battle of Olum Seheri.”

A "strong and valiant young man," handsome, with a steady self-possession. Not a wizard, but trusted at Terleman's back during command. Reads heraldic announcements at the post-Darkfaller reception with a magically-augmented voice, naming each magnate by accomplishment. The kind of man whose freely-given affection confounds his lover's political enemies and frustrates the matchmaking womenfolk of the kingdom.
