Lady of Maramor
The first time the books met βLady Arsellaβ in Knights Magi, she was actually Maid Belsi, a chambermaid impersonating her mistress to claim sanctuary at the ruined manor while the gurvani roamed the countryside. The real Arsella was at that moment chained in a coffle being marched north into the Wilderlands to be a slave.
She survived more than three years on a hardscrabble Wilderlands farm, watching companions from Maramor fall by the roadside. The Great Emancipation raids freed her along with hundreds of thousands of fellow Gilmorans; she made her way to Vanador, then home to Losara.
By the time she returned, βLady Arsellaβ (Belsi) was married to a Gilmoran knight, had a son, and held Maramor by ducal grant. The real Arsella convinced an itinerant lawbrother of her claim and presented it to Baron Astyral at Daronel:
I am Lady Arsella of Maramor, and this is my home you are invading!
β the impostor's opening line as Rondal first met her, Knights Magi
Astyral, recognising he had no clean way to choose between two competing testimonies, used a truthtell amulet and ruled for the second β the real Arsella. The first Arsella (Belsi) appealed under the new Magelaw codes, dragging the matter into Astyral's Yule Court at Daronel the year of Marshal Arcane.
Tyndal and Rondal are subpoenaed as witnesses. The case turns when Tyndal, under truthtell, calmly volunteers that βLady Arsellaβ (Belsi) had offered herself sexually to him at Maramor and that her geographic knowledge stopped abruptly at the manor's borders β suspicious for a noblewoman, ordinary for a chambermaid:
Usually a noblewoman from a small house is very familiar with every square inch her family owns. This βLady Arsellaβ barely knew the place.
β Sir Tyndal under truthtell, Marshal Arcane
Count Minalan takes the principals into Astyral's private chamber and uses an Insight spell to confirm via biological essences that the two women are first cousins, sharing a grandfather. He then issues what Brother Bryte calls βan adept example of baby splittingβ:
Now, I recognize you as the true heir of this place β Maramor Manor and environs. Congratulations, you just got the ancestral home, which I'm sure your cousin and her husband left in good repair. . . . Does that satisfy you?
β Minalan to Lady Arsella, Marshal Arcane
Arsella accepts the deal with a curtsey, and Minalan privately reminds her she should not press her cousin too hard:
Few can get through three years of hardship and trauma without being forced into making some compromises.
β Minalan, addressing Arsella's pride, Marshal Arcane
The two cousins manage a hesitant embrace before being dismissed. Maramor is now Arsella's; Ketral is Belsi's; the boy Tynron (whose name is a nod to Tyndal & Rondal he was conceived by) becomes the young heir Arsella must someday work alongside.

Young Cottonlord noblewoman in her early twenties, lean from three years of Wilderlands slavery, her hair regrown but her hands marked. Dressed for the trial in dark green with elaborate black crewling and a matching hat -- a "predatory look in her eye" as her advocate recites her lineage. Boldly meets Minalan's stare in the private chamber when he asks if she hated her chambermaid before the war; can only admit she had affection for Belsi. Restored heiress of an ancestral manor she has not lived in since her teens.
