Baron of Rolone, Farise Operations Partner
Lorcus is introduced as a Remeran warmage candidate paired with a stuffy siege-engineer rival in the witchstone competition. "I took to Lorcus immediately. He was eager for the power of the stone, but that eagerness was tempered by at least a bit of humility. Lorcus approached it as a great honor, and after he saw what sorts of things we were doing in Sevendor, he appreciated that honor all the more."
Outperforms his Remeran rival "thanks to Lorcus' cleverness and keen observation." On a two-man scouting mission into Sashtalia, Lorcus's humane, witty report shows his deeper strategic mind β he notices the carpenter whose young wife vanished into Dunselen's castle: "I spoke with one poor carpenter who was out of his mind. His young wife was among the first of his conquests. She's been gone for over a year, now, and Dunselen's people won't even let him into the castle to inquire about her anymore. The rumor is that he's keeping them in his dungeon. For unsavory purposes."
Becomes Minalan's preferred troubleshooter. "Sir Ryff wasn't pleased by the prospect of being under the command of a commoner, and a warmage at that, but Lorcus was an easy man to follow." Earns his witchstone as the best of his cohort.
Serves as one of Minalan's warmage-lieutenants through the Kasari Great March and the pele-tower campaign. Still the sardonic Remeran, still the humane observer. Continues to grow in reputation and responsibility.
Lorcus takes center stage as Minalan's political troubleshooter. Found sitting in the window of Minalan's workshop tower: "You had to have a lot of patience with Lorcus."
On the Knights of Nablus (the rebadged Censorate): his gossip-gathering on the Royal Court's Family court plot. Minalan: "I'd taken Lorcus into service partially because he was cunning, devious, intelligent . . . and he didn't kiss my ass. He respected me, the man, not the title or even the power." Minalan: "You are a devious man, Min, Lorcus admitted, admiringly."
Leads the Rolone campaign with Minalan, Tyndal, Rondal, Bendonal, and Lanse of Bune β stealing castles for the crown against Dunselen's ally Sir Ganulan. At Dunselen's keep, Lorcus incinerates the enemy who has wounded Rondal.
Offstage; continues his political troubleshooting work for Minalan in the Rolone region.
Major role. Lorcus commands the strategic direction of Tyndal and Rondal's Enultramar operations. The Tower Arcane heist β where the Censorate's accumulated loot is stolen from Old Falas β is Lorcus's operation. His wit carries much of the book's strategic banter; he is the Farisian-born Remeran warmage with a touch of showman's flair who teaches the Estasi Order how to run intricate long-range political operations.
Lorcus reacts memorably to Terleman's siege-worm immolation at Gavard/Anthatiel: "Well cast! Huin's hairy hams, that's a warmage!" Participates in the Olum Seheri strike force in a support role. A rising magelord in his own right.
Now settled in Rolone as a baron in his own right. Maintains his running banter with Minalan's circle; his Rolone wine and mansion serve as a gathering place.
Lorcus's wife is kidnapped during the Sevendor Magic Fair raid by Mycin Amana's Enshadowed infiltrators β "Lorcus . . . he's worse off than you, I think." Tyndal: "I'd kill them all for that, alone." Drives Lorcus's personal stake in the subsequent Darkfaller campaign.
Consulted on Darkfaller-raid planning while Minalan is wrestling with Yith-induced madness. Lorcus's political instincts and Rolone connections contribute to the broader Castali-Alshari alignment against Mycin Amana.
Participates directly in the Darkfaller Raid. On the eve of battle, Rondal quips to him: "At least you won't have a bunch of in-laws on the field in battle. My future brother-in-law and my future father-in-law are insisting on being included." Lorcus's wife is among the Darkfaller captives rescued during the raid.
Lorcus plays a significant role in the Farise operation. His Remeran connections and hoxter-pocket smuggler routes make him an ideal clandestine logistics partner for Minalan's Mirkandar cover and for coordinating with Planus and Asalon the Fair.
