Rellin Pratt

Candidate for Doge of Farise, Brotherhood of the Rat Operative, Shadowmage

Knights Magi

Introduced as "Kaffin of Gyre" β€” the charming sparring companion Tyndal meets on arrival at Inarion Academy. "Of noble stock. The second son of a knight from the coastland domain of Gyre Shore. The Sea Knights of Gyre, as Tyndal had learned six times in the two weeks he'd been here, were descended from Farisian pirates who'd sworn fealty to the Dukes of Castal, in return for keeping their brethren at bay, and engaging in a little lucrative piracy against Merwyn and Alshar. Kaffin reveled in his family legacy of honorable cutthroats and their skill with the blade. Becoming Talented was a crushing blow."

Uses a slightly-curved blade, a family-preferred scimitar, then a Rat Tail β€” a "long, nine inches, a third of it hilt, in the shape of a stylized rat. The point was sharp to the touch. It would have eviscerated him." Arrogant, smirking, a skilled duelist who masks his skill: Tyndal only learns after the fact that Kaffin's early "clumsy" defeat was theatre β€” "devoted to observing how Tyndal responded."

"I've been fencing since I was six. I've had three swordsmasters before my Talent emerged." "I'm not afraid. I fear nothing!" Struggles with Thaumaturgic Theory. Secretly a Brotherhood of the Rat operative: steals Tyndal's witchstone; kills Estasia (thrown from a roof) and sets up Galdan as patsy. Unmasked on the rooftop duel:

The name is not Kaffin of Gyre. Oh, it is my name β€” in Narasi. In Farisian, though, my name is Relin Pratt. Lord Relin Pratt, of the House of Pratt. My mother's side.

Orril Pratt is his uncle, the Mad Mage of Farise β€” "My uncle was a great man!"

Calls the Brotherhood's inner elite "Princes of the Waves. The Seaborn are the elite of the Brotherhood. Our families have guided it for centuries." Kills with a Rat Tail. Escapes using a Shadowmagic smoke spell. Rondal and Tyndal both become sworn enemies. Estasia's death is the emotional wound: "I liked her. A lot."

Shadowmage

Now named openly as Rellin Pratt. Leader of the Yadraymar Crew in Enultramar. Rondal and Tyndal plan a counter-operation to lure him into a trap at Galvina Abbey:

Drama. Within a day, Rellin Pratt will hear about the bequest, and he'll crawl out of whatever hole he's in.

Arrives with a crew via ship. Tyndal says:

Tyndal would never forget that face, those eyes. The man who'd been responsible for the theft of his witchstone, and the death of his friend Estasia.

Imperial-mother faith:

My mother follows the Imperial gods as did my uncle. Not the Five Daughters.

Hot temper:

Fools! Someone is having a game at me, and I dislike it! Whoever it was will answer for it. No one makes a fool of House Pratt!

Confronts the Jester; abbey collapsed on them via Rondal's unbinding spell. Retreats; Tyndal reveals himself on the dock: "You! Tyndal! You're responsible for this!" Hurls arcane fire that blasts a dock plank where Tyndal stood. Obsession with irionite noted as ongoing threat β€” "imagine Rellin Pratt with real irionite. He's the nephew of the Mad Mage."

Practical Adept

Now a candidate for Doge of Farise under the name "Stafan of Gyre" (another alias). Minalan/Mirkandar meets him in Farise at a magical party. "That's Rellin Pratt. Orril's nephew. The scion of the Mad Mage." Tyndal and Rondal retain their grudge:

They would slay him on sight. I recall how they were, after they returned from the Academy and Relan Cor.

Physical/character: "young and handsome" (contrast with the pot-bellied, sallow Count Cingaran). Works the room expertly β€” "He knew all of their names, their families, and their occupations. Managed to find some personal detail to bring up to each guest." Confident, a captain of note, a practiced adept, experienced seaman.

Seeks support to become Doge of Farise, restoring Farisian sovereignty. Minalan (as Mirkandar) needles him with the crowd:

I'm certain we can work out a fair and equitable system for all.

"Gentlemen, I present to you a vision of the future, one in which fair governance and the welfare of the citizens of Farise is assured under the purview of the wisest adepts now living." "More guidelines than rules." Minalan's verdict: "unimpressed with the pirate king's spellcraft." "I fear the Alshari exiles will take Merwyn's coin and betray Farise. I don't think Pratt would. Pratt may be the foil I need."

Cingaran opposes him; Rellin gets backing from the Restorationists, and survives the rigorous examination committee to become the approved candidate. Vote certified. Ultimately superseded by Minalan claiming the Doge title personally:

Then you can challenge me, after I kill Rellin in front of you. He's killed hundreds of men.

Minalan executes him. The Palizoa Order had covertly supported him precisely because he had the best chance to hold Farise against Merwyn.
