Vanamin

Infant

Preceptor

Vanamin is born in Book 16 at Spellmonger's Hall in Vanador, in a ritual carefully scheduled to coincide with the snowstone spell. Chapter 29 is titled "Vanamin." Alya delivers him under Lilastien's care, with Minalan performing the Natal Spark ritual using Tanno Amberil, Ulin, Taren, and Lady Varen as assistants. Three goddesses manifest (Briga plus two more) to provide the Divine energy; the Morath Sigil unbinding goes critical; Alya screams, Lilastien yells triumphantly, and Vanamin is born.

A powerful arcane wave knocks out every magus in the room; the spell works. Everything silica-bearing within 3,500 feet is turned to snowstone; beyond that, a greenish "luster" affects a further 2,000-foot band. Alya names him "for Vanador. And my sweet husband, who finally made snowstone again." Physically: "The baby was tiny, compared to the other two she'd birthed," three weeks premature but "hale and hardy as a man could ask for," full head of hair, sucking lustily. Minalan: "A tiny version of my father, I noted." The Handmaiden (embodied in the Magolith) is "quite protective over the children, especially Vanamin."

Practical Adept

Infant and toddler throughout Practical Adept, growing rapidly between Minalan's long absences. Alya considers another pregnancy:

I had figured that after Vanamin's eventful birthing she would find her maternal desires fulfilled.

Minalan enchants Vanamin's cradle to be soundproof so Alya can travel with him:

I put a spell on the cradle! Vanamin can't hear anything in there!

After a long absence:

I was amazed at how much little Vanamin had grown in such a short time.

During a magical scene:

Vanamin persisted in watching the entire scene wide-eyed with an infant's expression of wonder.

Alya takes him to the beach in Farise.
