The Bransei Migration

Ceremony ยท Book 6 ยท Journeymage

The escort of two thousand Kasari children, families, and elders out of the Bransei Mountain refuge through the Wilderlands and Castali frontier to the Kasar homeland in the deep north. Minalan accepted the commission from Captain Arborn at Yule (Book 5), used Anguin's ducal commission as legal cover, and led the long march. Tyndal and Rondal were dispatched separately on the Kasari Sacred Quest to recover an ancient idol from the abandoned Endrenar shrine.

The Bransei Migration was the long Kasari-to-Kasar relocation of two thousand Kasari refugees out of the Bransei Mountain stronghold (then increasingly threatened by Sheruel's expansion) and across the Wilderlands and Castali frontier to safety in the Kasari homeland of Kasar, far in the deep north.

The commission

The commission was made to Minalan by Captain Arborn at Yule, in High Mage:

We have need of a mage. A great mage. Bransei, our northwestern stronghold, is a stout and formidable settlement. It is unlikely that the gurvani will ever overcome it while the Kasari still fight. Yet . . . there are children in Bransei, children who suffer from the atmosphere of war even if they are not yet fighting it.

โ€” Captain Arborn to Minalan

The migration was unprecedented in modern Five Duchies history: a foreign people moving in mass through sovereign humani territory, escorted by the Spellmonger and his Magical Corps as legal-political cover. Duke Anguin, then still in exile, granted Minalan a written commission to escort his subjects through the Alshari Wilderlands โ€” the first sovereign act of the Orphan Duke's reign and the political reason Pentandra was first sent to befriend him.

The route

The march moved in blocks of a few hundred to keep the column manageable, with Captain Arborn's rangers thoroughly scouting the entire route. Minalan led the magical escort; Sir Cei commanded the conventional infantry support; Carmella built portable fortifications at each major waypoint.

The Sacred Quest

In parallel, Sir Tyndal and Sir Rondal were dispatched on the Kasari Sacred Quest: a separate small-team mission to recover an ancient idol from the abandoned Endrenar shrine deep in the Penumbra, sanctioned by Kasari elders as a coming-of-age trial for the apprentice-mage knights. The quest produced their first independent operational test outside the Magical Corps and the materials for their later book-3-and-4 arc.

Outcomes

The migration succeeded. Two thousand Kasari reached Kasar alive. The Orphan's Band โ€” the mercenary company recruited from the Wilderlords and Bovali muster used to escort the migration โ€” survived to become the elite formation that would later seize Vorone for Anguin. Pentandra's relationship with Arborn deepened during the trip; her eventual marriage and Kasari-rite naturalisation began here.
