The Velsignal Hall Dragon-Head Gambit

Ceremony · Book 10 · Necromancer

The propaganda stunt at the Vernal Moot of the Alshari nobility, where Tyndal, Rondal, and Atopol used a hoxter ring to drop a partially-decomposed dragon's head onto the Coral Seat in front of Count Vichetral as he was speaking against the absent monarch. The rumour spread across Enultramar within days, breaking the rebel narrative that Anguin was a powerless puppet.

The Velsignal Hall Dragon-Head Gambit was the curtain-raiser propaganda stunt that preceded the Restoration of Enultramar. Sir Tyndal, Sir Rondal, and Sir Atopol infiltrated Velsignal Hall — the noble assembly chamber containing the Coral Seat — during the Vernal Moot of the Alshari nobility, while Count Vichetral of Rhemes was speaking against the “absent monarch.”

The setup

Velsignal Hall was the sole chamber in the Falas palace complex outside ducal direct control: a gallery-and-podium hall where the Alshari nobility could discuss issues of state without ducal censure. Count Vichetral, leader of the rebel Five Counts, was using the Vernal Moot to advance the case for replacing Anguin as duke entirely. Lady Gatina's House Furtius had been planning the response for months.

The drop

Atopol, the shadowmage, used a hoxter ring — targeted to a spot twenty feet over the Coral Seat and ten feet in front — to materialise a partially-decomposed dragon's head, harvested from one of the Sevendori kills, which then plummeted to the floor with a meaty thwack in front of the speaking Count. Velsignal Hall erupted; the sulfury odour hit; the Count's speech ended abruptly.

Why it worked

Gatina had read the politics correctly:

Oh, the rumor of what happened in Velsignal Hall will spread in direct proportion to how strenuously Count Vichetral and his fellows tries to put a lid on the pot. It is one of the worst possible places to try to keep a secret. The story of the dragon's head will be known across Enultramar by tomorrow at dusk. Nor will they be able to keep Anguin's name from being associated with it.

— Lady Gatina, on the gambit

The dragon's head was inarguable physical proof of Sevendori magical power, dropped into the heart of rebel Falas. Vichetral could not credibly suppress the story; the rumour spread across Enultramar within forty-eight hours. The narrative that Anguin was a powerless puppet collapsed.

Consequences

The gambit did not topple the Five Counts. It did exactly what Gatina needed it to do: it broke the “absent monarch” talking point in the south and gave the Wilderlord raid that followed something to land on. The full Restoration of Enultramar was politically possible because the Velsignal stunt had pre-prepared the ground.
