The chain of islands scattered across the Shattered Sea between Alshar and Unstara — source of Farise's famous carpets, sensual music, and much of its slave population.
The Shattered Isles are the archipelago scattered across the Shattered Sea — the southern waters between Alshar, Farise, and Unstara. Culturally rich and politically loose, they are a patchwork of small kingdoms, chieftaincies, and independent trading ports whose sailors, gods, and goods find their way into every major port of the Shallow Sea.
Their commercial footprint in Farise is enormous: "Farisians are wild about their carpets, most of which were imported from the Shattered Isles." Their music is equally iconic — "the sensual sounds of the Shattered Isles," in Minalan's words, is one of the unique cultural signatures of the southern ports. Settlers and slaves from the Shattered Isles have established "a dozen small shrines and chapels for their many, many gods" along the temple avenues of Farise, alongside the larger Unstaran complexes.
The Shattered Isles are also, alongside Unstara, a principal source of the slave trade that has troubled the southern seas for a thousand years — the same trade Doge Mirkandar I of Farise (Minalan) moved to suppress in Practical Adept. Enshalada, mentioned in the same series of exploratory chapters, appears to be a significant island or state within (or adjacent to) the Shattered Isles.
