Unstara

Unstara is a distant land across the Shattered Sea, far to the south of the Five Duchies and to the east of Farise. It was one of the Magocracy's original trading destinations — "When the Magocracy's nascent merchant fleet departed Farise, bound for Unstara, the Far Isles, and points beyond on a great commercial expedition, their escort of Cormeeran warships sailed first far to the west to screen them from the threat of pirates along the Scorched Coast" — and it remained one of the Five Duchies' principal commercial partners in the Shallow Sea for a thousand years, alongside Merwyn, Cormeer, and the Shattered Isles.

By the time of the series Unstara is independent, occasionally hostile, and famous in Farise both for its wealthy expatriate community (whose "lavish temple complex" to their foreign gods has stood on a Farisian avenue for centuries) and for its deep drums, which Minalan calls out as one of the unique sounds of the Farisian musical scene: "the sensual sounds of the Shattered Isles, the deep drums of Unstara, the relentless, hypnotic rhythms of the natives here." Unstaran rebels also appear as recurring pirate-era figures in the background history of the Shallow Sea.

Campotbuden, on the northwestern side of Unstara, was once the site of a small Colonial Defense Force base — a fact preserved in the Unger Station archives. Heeth notes in Practical Adept that the base was "a small base, and there's probably not much left of it, but we might find some ruins there." It remains the only named locale within Unstara in the surviving records.
