Ancient evil imprisoned in the Deeps — their release would end all magic
The Formless are an ancient evil that dwells imprisoned in the deepest places beneath Callidore's surface. They predate nearly all other life on the planet, having existed since before the current age of the world. Their release would, by all accounts, mean the end of all magic — and likely the end of civilization as the peoples of Callidore know it.
The Vundel have maintained the imprisonment of the Formless for over half a million years, treating this vigil as the central purpose of their civilization. The wards and seals holding the Formless in the Deeps are among the oldest magical workings in existence, maintained at enormous cost across countless generations.
The Formless do not act alone. They have vassals — beings they have created, corrupted, or bound to their service — including the Beldurrazeko (Living Darkness), the Kurja, and the Nagulib. Through these servants they can exert limited influence on the surface world even while imprisoned.
What the Formless truly are — whether they have individual identity, whether they think, whether they want — is not entirely clear. They represent something more like a primordial force of negation than a civilization of individual beings, though their servants act with purpose and intelligence on their behalf.
