The Great Race of Yith — impossibly ancient memory collectors older than the universe's stability
The Yith, sometimes called the Great Race of Yith, are among the oldest beings in existence — they spawned before the universe itself had fully stabilized. They predate even the Vundel in the long history of conscious beings, and their understanding of time, consciousness, and existence operates on a scale that mortal minds struggle to grasp.
The defining characteristic of the Yith is their practice of collecting memories. They travel across time and dimensions, inhabiting the bodies of other beings and experiencing their lives, recording their thoughts and experiences in vast archives. The hosts of a Yith's memories retain some residue of those collected lives — which is why Lilastien of the Alka Alon carries within her the memories of humans, Vundel, Ancient Trees, and beings from beyond Callidore entirely.
Szal is the named Yith representative known to interact with the peoples of Callidore, acting as something of an ambassador for this impossibly ancient race. The Yith do not involve themselves in mortal affairs lightly, but their interest in Callidore's ongoing magical transformation has drawn their attention.
Their physical nature in their original form is not well understood by most beings who encounter them, as they typically manifest through memory-sharing and consciousness-transfer rather than direct physical presence.
