Pathfinder

Pathfinder is the long teaching-staff Sir Rondal carries on duty and lectures with at the Order school. It is, by Rondal's own admission, "an entire textbook on a stick": its bindings include ward-laying, ley-work, navigation, divination, and the slow analytical magics that make the modern Imperial Magic curriculum.

The staff has seen its share of action — Pathfinder was the working tool at the relief of Anjak's tower, where Rondal laid the misdirection wards that let the Sky Riders strike the besiegers from an unexpected quarter — but it is, fundamentally, the object Rondal teaches with. Half a generation of knights magi have learned their first hex-circles by watching him chalk one out under its tip.
