Thaumaturgic Modeling

Technique

The high art of constructing a working miniature of a spell or system — most famously in dioramic magic, where a full-size working model replicates the original at a distance.

Thaumaturgic modeling is the high art of building a working miniature of a spell, a mechanism, or an entire system, such that the miniature faithfully replicates or projects the behaviour of its full-sized referent. It is the theoretical engine behind some of the most advanced magic in the series: a mage who can model a thing thaumaturgically can also manipulate that thing at a distance.

Its most famous practical application is dioramic magic — the construction of detailed miniature dioramas that function as remote-operation consoles for anything from a battlefield to a city. Lanse of Bune is the Kingdom's leading dioramicist; his dioramas are how the Magelaw's war councils track engagements in real time. Heeth the Butler begins his career as a dabbling dioramicist, which is part of what recommends him to Minalan. The Alka Alon Song-masters perform their own version of the same art with song-models rather than physical miniatures.
