Alscot

Mercenary Warmage

High Mage

Alscot joins the cast on-page in High Mage as the latest candidate Minalan is interviewing for elevation to High Mage. He has the resume for it β€” "a veteran mercenary warmage more used to camps than courts," fresh off the climactic battle of the dragon at Cambrian Castle and counter-insurgency work in Gilmora. Minalan describes him as charmingly two-faced:

"He's a good-looking fellow, but when that pleasant smile turns nasty it can have a withering effect."

β€” Minalan, on Alscot the Fair (High Mage)

He accompanies Minalan and Sir Festaran north to Vorone and Tudry to assess the magelaw frontier. In Vorone he's detailed to investigate the army encampment while Festaran works the refugee camps; his report on the garrison's state, the Iron Ring recruiter's loan-sharking practices, and the dice-fixing rumors is delivered with a mercenary's eye for detail and zero illusions:

"If they sit here, Magelord, they are little more than fodder for the sacrificial stone. They do this in Gilmora. Raid the outer villages, and anyone who isn't snatched up runs to the nearest castle. Eventually, you get everyone in one place. Far more than can be defended. Fear and desperation and hunger do their job for them. They can wait until they are ready to pluck the fruit from the tree when it is ripe."

β€” Alscot to Minalan, on the gurvani strategy in Gilmora (High Mage)

While they're still touring, Bendonal calls out for help β€” Azar and his rescue party are pinned down in a ruined Penumbra shrine, surrounded by gurvani priests preparing a dark sorcery. Minalan, Bendonal, Sir Festaran, and Alscot ride out at dusk. Alscot has just been gifted his witchstone and is openly itching to use it:

"Yes!" bellowed Alscot.
...
"Screw that, I want to destroy something!"

β€” Alscot, on the prospect of using magic in the field (High Mage)

The rescue succeeds. Alscot, Bendonal, and the Horkan High Magi cut through hobgoblin lines "like a scythe through wheat" to reach the gurvani priests and break the dark sorcery. Afterward, Alscot stays at Megelin Castle rather than ride to Wilderhall with Minalan, electing to "experiment with [his witchstone] where the only ones he'd hurt were goblins." He had previously worn the red tunic of the Horkan Order's regular (non-irionite) warmagi.

By the climax of the book, Alscot is among the High Magi who join the assault on Anthatiel β€” "the most powerful human magi in centuries, and most had been fighting for years." During the chaotic rear-guard action covering the wounded's escape down the Poros, Alscot is described in the thick of the fighting:

"Alscot the Fair was impaling a hobgoblin behind him, one leg trailing blood with every step. 'Protect the wounded!' he cried, turning to separate a troll from his kneecap with a wand I hadn't seen him draw under his cloak."

β€” Minalan, during the retreat from Anthatiel (High Mage)

Alscot ends High Mage as one of Minalan's most reliable veteran combat magi β€” not a noble, not a household name, but a working warmage with a witchstone, in the kind of place where the wounded need protecting.

Practical Adept

By Practical Adept, Alscot has been a working warmage "forever" by Sandoval's reckoning β€” long enough to have served in the original conquest of Farise "during the invasion and a few months of the occupation," and to have fought on through the Anthatiel and Magelaw years (he was at the climax of High Mage). He is recruited by Sandoval for Mirkandar's Farise operation, alongside Bold Asgus and others. Sandoval's pitch is brisk and practical:

"Alscot the Fair... he's been around forever. He served during the invasion and a few months of the occupation. He's fast, quick-witted, and keeps his head in a fight."

β€” Sandoval to Minalan, recruiting Alscot for Farise (Practical Adept)

During the Farise endgame, Alscot is one of three commanders Lorcus has on hand when Minalan starts handing out commissions: "You have Curmor, Asgus, and Alscot the Fair." His role is to enable the bloodless transition by holding ground while Asgus is appointed temporary head of the Palace Guard and Lorcus takes the Iron Wheel as a Commonwealth Field Marshal under Sandoval.

Alscot has now appeared on-page across two books separated by twelve years in-universe (High Mage Year 3 to Practical Adept Year 10) without ever rising above field-grade combat work β€” one of the wiki's clearest examples of the long professional life of a senior mercenary warmage.
