Megelin Castle

Fortress ยท The Penumbra

The eastern Penumbra command-fortress, held by Azar and (later) Bendonal the Outlaw as the Horkan Order's primary forward base. Built around the eastern frontier where the Penumbra and the Castali Wilderlands meet, Megelin became the working prototype of the Iron Ring fortress system.

Megelin Castle is the eastern Penumbra command-fortress of the Horkan Order, held by Magelord Azar with Bendonal the Outlaw as second-in-command. Built around the eastern frontier where the Penumbra meets the Castali Wilderlands, Megelin became the working prototype of the Iron Ring fortress system that eventually fully encircled Sheruel's territory.

Strategic role

Megelin commands the eastern lobe of the Penumbra-frontier defensive line. The Baron of Megelin (the original mundane noble who held the post pre-war) committed nine hundred heavy horse to the relief of Tudry in Book 2. After the founding of the Horkan Order at the Robinwing Conclave, Megelin was reorganised as the Order's field headquarters under Azar. Bendonal the Outlaw โ€” recovered from his Timberwatch wounds โ€” became second-in-command and rebuilt the castle into a working modern fortress.

Order presence

Megelin houses several distinct magical-military formations:

  • Horkan Order command: permanent staff of ten high warmagi, with twenty more in rotation.
  • Hesian Order depot: five warmagi dedicated to defensive magic and logistics.
  • Megelini Knights: the conventional cavalry that struck the gurvani at Tudry; later expanded into a heavy-cavalry force operating across the Wilderlords frontier.
  • Yellow-sashed warmagi: regular (non-irionite) warmagi distinguished from the red-sashed High Magi.

Defensive design

The vicious-looking Ilnarsi death-rune โ€” the Horkan Order sigil โ€” flies from every battlement and on every soldier's tabard. The road leading to the gatehouse is lined with hundreds of staked goblin heads on both sides; the trophies are trapped, with magesight-detectable wards. (No one wants any more Sheruels: Sheruel's original head was stolen from a similar spike two centuries earlier and reanimated.) Megelin's wards, supply, and forward-scouting capability are the model the Iron Ring elsewhere imitates.

Significance

Megelin is where Bendonal, post-recovery, demonstrated the executive talent that complemented Azar's field flamboyance. The Bendonal-Azar partnership at Megelin is the operational template for the magelord-warmage joint command that ran the Penumbra war for the rest of the saga. Megelin remains under Magelaw command at the close of Practical Adept.
