Steward of Taragwen
Sir Ganulan is the pimply-faced sixteen-year-old bastard of Sire Gimbal, given a nominal lordship over Brestal Vale (with his uncle Sir Lanulan as regent). Minalan first encounters him trespassing on Sevendori land during a hunt; Ganulan arrogantly proclaims himself heir to Gimbal and is humiliated when Minalan magically disarms him.
He later challenges Minalan to a duel to the death to reclaim Brestal, bringing along his sworn sword-brother Sir Surbaral and the young Sir Festaran of Hosly. Minalan accidentally nicks his earlobe and wins the duel by forfeit, then holds Ganulan as leverage before releasing him.
At the climactic surrender where Gimbal is about to yield, Ganulan hears his mother is a captive, grabs a battle-axe, and charges Minalan screaming obscenities β breaking the truce. Sarakeem's blue-feathered arrow sprouts from his left kneecap before he reaches within two paces of Minalan. He is not killed: his screaming is silenced by a spell, Brother Mison and the landbrothers treat his shattered knee, and he is given into Gimbal's custody when the Warbird goes into exile with Vulric. The wound leaves him permanently crippled on that leg.
Ganulan is now an outlaw with a magemark of stars and snowflakes on his face, marking an unpaid ransom. He has been secretly mining snowstone at Taragwen in Sashtalia and shipping it out through Lasserport. Tyndal, Rondal, and Sir Festaran disrupt the operation, capture his partner, and let Ganulan himself go free on the technicality that his activities were not illegal under Sashtalian law. Tyndal has secretly placed a second, tracking-enchanted magemark on him so that wherever he runs, he leads the Estasi Order to Minalan's enemies.
Mentioned only: Ganulan is an outlaw in the Bontal backcountry, fleeing his magemark for two years. He does not appear on-page.
Ganulan returns in a major role. He is found gut-shot by crossbow in Amel Wood after a raid led by Lady Mask (operating under the alias Flyndrig). His memory has been magically scrambled by the gurvani-signature spell. Tyndal tracks his recent movements back through southern Rolone, implicating Sire Cullien in sheltering his band.
Master Dranus restores his memory. Ganulan then bitterly tells Minalan his whole story: once the snowstone trade was broken, the warmage Dyvors hired him to spy on Sevendor, then to run a bandit company that was then quietly taken over by Lady Mask. He overheard Mask communicating via magic mirror with her partner β revealed to be Baroness Isily of Greenflower β about plots involving the slaughter of Minalan's family, the abduction of an artifact from Sevendor, and a conspiracy to gather witchstones. Mask shot him and abandoned him when he confronted her. Despite a lifetime of hatred for Minalan, Ganulan is disgusted by Mask's plans for Alya and the children. Minalan removes his magemark, pardons him, and offers him an honorable post as tenant lord and steward.
Minalan proposes to Tyndal and Rondal that their Estasi Order take Ganulan on formally as steward of Taragwen Keep. Tyndal calls him "that wart" but eventually agrees β trading the favor for permission to grant certain witchstones to their sworn companions. Gareth notes that Sir Cei "thinks there is a man to be made of him."
Ganulan has settled into his role as steward of the Estasi Order at Taragwen Keep. He greets Minalan with reserved coolness β he "more or less hated me," Minalan admits β but the arrangement works. After Tyndal and Rondal's raid on Olum Seheri, Ganulan organizes a great feast for seventy returning veterans: two oxen, three pigs, assorted wildfowl, and hired Tal Alon cooks brought in from Hollyburrow. It is the quiet closing note of his redemption arc.
