Magelord
Gareth, son of Galyn, arrives seeking to become a warmage but fails Minalan's martial assessment β he has genuine magical Talent but lacks the physical strength, constitution, and combat temperament that a witchstone warmage requires. Rather than dismiss him, Minalan sets him to work in Sevendor, where he thrives. Under Zagor, Olmeg, and Banamor's mentorship he develops into a first-class thaumaturge and enchanter with an excellent head for numbers. He assists Banamor in organizing the Magic Fair, helps Olmeg with land surveys and mulching, and begins demonstrating a talent for magical devices. He has a wheezy voice and a self-aware understanding of his own limitations that Minalan comes to appreciate.
Knights Magi
Gareth is appointed manciple (logistics officer) for Minalan's great march to escort thousands of Kasari children to safety in the Wilderlands. Though he openly resents the bureaucratic nature of the assignment while others get to go on an adventure, he proves that his organizational talent is his greatest weapon. His meticulous planning of provisions, supply chains, and logistics allows the march to succeed. He is the unglamorous but indispensable backbone of the expedition.
High Mage
Gareth serves as Banamor's deputy Spellwarden and manages the expanding magical fair and commercial operations in Sevendor. He runs the day-to-day business in Banamor's absence and is noted for his exceptional organizational abilities. He also acts as deputy marshal when Minalan is away.
Journeymage
Gareth serves as Banamor's deputy and manciple on the Long March, handling logistics for the expedition. He also helps run the improvised enchanting workshop in Merwyn, where he organizes a crew of local enchanters to produce magical goods using irionite, revolutionizing the enchanting industry in the region. His administrative genius allows the operation to scale rapidly, and he trains teams in systematic enchantment production. He is now firmly established as one of the most valuable non-warmage magi in Sevendor.
Enchanter
Gareth continues as Banamor's deputy Spellwarden, now also managing the growing Bouleuterion enterprise. He is involved in helping test new magical constructs and defenses. In a revealing personal conversation with Tyndal and Rondal, Gareth confesses his deep frustration over his romantic interest in Dara and his sense that he will never measure up in her eyes β a rare window into the loneliness and self-doubt beneath his capable professional exterior. He also helps defend the Sevendor Magic Fair against aggressive warmagi who attempt to intimidate him.
Court Wizard
Gareth is credited in this book with a major magical breakthrough: he discovers how to use the Alka Alon songspells embedded in the special witchstones, allowing other magi (not just Minalan) to use the Waypoints. This discovery fundamentally changes the tactical situation, allowing warmagi to rapidly deploy to crisis points across the kingdom. He also personally guides magi through their first Waypoint transits and helps Alurra, Pentandra's cat-familiar, improve her magical sight. His contributions remain behind the scenes but are noted as essential by both Pentandra and Terleman.
Shadowmage
Gareth plays a significant supporting role in the clandestine missions of this book. He assists Tyndal and Rondal with counterintelligence work against the Brotherhood of the Rat in Enultramar and provides administrative and logistical support. He proves his value and courage on the mission to Olum Seheri despite having no formal warmage training. In the aftermath, he reaches a painful breaking point over Dara β having risked his life in hopes of impressing her, only to discover her heart belongs elsewhere. He publicly declares his departure from Sevendor in an emotionally raw confrontation.
Necromancer
Gareth is involved in counterintelligence and organizational work at Sevendor during this period, working with Tyndal, Rondal, and the magi against the Brotherhood of the Rat. He builds several magical constructs for use in the castle's defenses and helps test new battle-staves. His deep knowledge of Sevendori affairs makes him a quiet but essential intelligence resource. His emotional situation regarding Dara remains painful; after risking his life in Enultramar to impress her, his final confrontation results in him storming out and departing Sevendor.
Thaumaturge
Gareth serves as the Lord Steward of Vanador in Thaumaturge, the civilian administrator responsible for the practical realities of building a city from nothing in the middle of a war. He coordinates the labor forces, allocates building materials, manages the influx of settlers and refugees, and resolves the endless disputes that arise in a rapidly growing frontier community. Where Minalan provides vision and Terleman provides defense, Gareth provides the unglamorous administrative machinery that makes Vanador function. His talent for organization and his even temper under pressure make him indispensable to the Magelaw project.
Arcanist
Gareth's steady hand as Lord Steward keeps Sevendor functioning despite Minalan's frequent absences on campaign. In Arcanist, his administrative acumen ensures that the castle, staff, and lands remain well-managed and that Alya has capable support in running the domain. His value lies not in arcane power but in the practical governance that allows mage-lords to focus on war and magic.
Footwizard
Gareth serves as Thaumaturge and acts as steward during the Anghysbel expedition, eventually staying behind in the region to coordinate the evacuation of those sheltering in the ancient land. His organizational skills and scholarly nature make him indispensable for managing the complex logistics of the withdrawal from Anghysbel.
Hedgewitch
Gareth serves as Steward of Vanador in Pentandra's absence, administering the town and managing administrative affairs with impressive efficiency. He arranges a private meeting with Pentandra before Minalan's arrival to discuss the growing Gilmoran political movement. Gareth is also revealed to have had romantic feelings for Dara that ended in a painful public rejection, and this unresolved conflict comes to a dramatic head at the victory banquet, where he and Dara finally confront their history directly. He is noted as healthier and happier than previously, and is revealed to be in a romantic relationship with the Kasari Sky Captain Nattia.
The Mad Mage of Sevendor
Gareth remains in Anghysbel overseeing the evacuation of the colonial outpost and preparing the ancient facilities for eventual abandonment. He sends detailed reports and requests back to Minalan and requests supplies from Fondaras. Minalan notes with admiration that the young thaumaturge has managed everything admirably in his absence and is developing a deep knowledge of tekka, the ancient craft of their ancestors.
Marshal Arcane
Gareth remains stationed in Anghysbel during much of this book, sending reports to Pentandra via Nattia who ferries messages by hawk. Minalan reads Gareth's dispatches with satisfaction, noting that the young wizard has managed the Anghysbel outpost admirably and is preparing a constructed intelligence device as a gift. Gareth is now pursuing a relationship with Nattia and undergoing Kasari martial trials in preparation for marriage into her culture, learning archery and physical training from her brother Travid.
Preceptor
Gareth returns from Anghysbel during this period and is present among the magi assembled for the Beryen Council meeting. He has visibly changed from his time in the anti-magical wastes β more muscular, more confident, and more decisive. He is credited with helping design the talking wooden mushrooms at the upcoming wedding venue. Minalan also notes that Gareth, along with Taren and possibly Lady Varen, are the only enchanters capable of understanding his new dimensional magic handbook.
Practical Adept
Gareth has a major role in this book following his return from Anghysbel. He is visibly changed β more confident, more muscular, and bearing a wispy beard after a full year without magic in the jevolar wastes. He organizes the Luin's Day festival and has surprise stone installations delivered to Luin's temple. Most significantly, he leads an expedition into a colonial archaeological facility β the Sagan Institute Palomar Astronomical Facility β using his constructed intelligence "Getafix" to unlock and power up the ancient technology. His expertise with tekka, the craft of the ancients, proves essential to the discovery.
