Taren
Knight Mage, Warmage, Scout
Spellmonger
A warmage active in the frontier territories as the goblin crisis begins to unfold. Even in his earliest appearances, Taren's defining characteristic is his tactical creativity β he thinks about combat magic systematically, always looking for more effective spell combinations and deployment patterns. His approach is analytical rather than instinctive, and this perspective sets him apart from more conventional warmages.
Warmage
Knight Magi and tactical spell innovator during the Goblin War campaign. Develops novel offensive spell combinations that improve the warmages' effectiveness against gurvani formations. His tactical creativity β applying systematic thinking to magical combat β has an outsized impact on the outcome of several engagements. Recognized within the Order for this innovative approach.
Magelord
Knight Mage and Conclave participant. His innovative combat magic approach is increasingly recognized as the Order's tactical doctrine develops. Participates in the Battle of Cambrian Castle and the broader defense against the West Flerian threat.
Knights Magi
Knight Magi and key instructor in tactical combat magic for the first Knights Magi cohort. His spell innovations are formally incorporated into the training curriculum. His ability to translate creative tactical thinking into teachable techniques makes him an invaluable instructor alongside his battlefield contributions.
High Mage
Active Knight Magi in the Nemovorti operations. His tactical creativity is applied to the challenge of fighting enemies that resist conventional magical approaches. His problem-solving approach continues to be one of his most valuable contributions to the Order.
Journeymage
Active Knight Magi during Minalan's absence. Continues field operations and develops new tactical doctrine based on accumulated campaign experience.
Enchanter
Present at the Sevendor Magic Fair as a veteran Knight Magi. His long service and distinctive tactical approach have made him a respected and well-known figure within the Order.
Court Wizard
By Book 8 Taren has been appointed by Minalan to oversee the magically contaminated estates at Greenflower β a challenging assignment dealing with irionite-poisoned land that shows on his face. When the inner council of the Order convenes, he appears haggard and sleep-deprived, his chin now covered in long untended beard where only a wisp had grown before. His clothes remain of Castali aristocratic quality, but the disquiet and anxiety on his face are unmistakable. Despite this, he remains the Order's sharpest analytical mind β when asked for his assessment of the growing Nemovort threat under Korbal, he provides the most dire and unambiguous counsel in the room, insisting they must stop Korbal no matter the cost, as extinction would be a mercy compared to what would follow if the undead sorcerer's ambitions were realized.
Shadowmage
Taren appears in Book 9 in a frightening state β described as a bare shadow of the knight his comrades remembered. His eyes are dark and deeply sunken, his skin has a deathly pallor, and something has clearly happened to him during his work at Greenflower with the magically contaminated Salesius estate. He is a brilliant thaumaturge and combat mage whose cheerful enthusiasm has been replaced by haunted gravity. At the council of war, he proposes a dangerous and potentially catastrophic spell to counter the dragon threat β one he freely admits will probably kill him β demonstrating both his willingness to sacrifice himself for the cause and the terrible cost his magical research has been exacting on him. He also brings resources from Greenflower that prove invaluable to the Order's ongoing efforts.
Necromancer
Active in his role as a Knight Magi warmage, participating in military operations and providing combat support to Order missions during this tense phase of the ongoing war.
Thaumaturge
Taren serves as a reliable Knight Mage and field warmage throughout Thaumaturge, conducting scouting missions and holding defensive positions during the long campaign to establish and protect the Magelaw. His combat abilities and camaraderie with the other knights of the Order make him a trusted field commander under Terleman's overall direction. Though not in the spotlight, Taren's consistent soldiering is part of the backbone of the Order's military capability, ensuring that the Magelaw's borders hold against ongoing goblin incursions even as the larger campaign unfolds.
Arcanist
Taren plays a critical role as Minalan's chief thaumaturge, accompanying the expedition to interrogate the imprisoned Nemovort Khudoz. He performs the necromantic reanimation of the creature's corpse, drawing on the expertise he developed at Castle Saleisus, to allow communication with the ancient spirit within. Taren also produces a detailed theoretical report on snowstone, advancing the scholarly understanding of why and how the substance affects the Magosphere. His intellectual and warmage contributions firmly establish him as one of Minalan's most indispensable advisors.
Footwizard
Taren accompanies Minalan's expedition to Anghysbel as the party's chief thaumaturge and a secondary warmage. His expertise with enchantment and his role as a knowledgeable warmage make him invaluable on the dangerous journey through the anti-magical jevolar wastes. He has also grown close to the Greenflower War orphan children, acting as something of a foster-father figure to them during their time in Sevendor. His insights and philosophical conversations with Tyndal and Gareth on the trail add depth to the expedition's character.
Hedgewitch
Taren is mentioned attending the victory banquet at Vanador alongside the other senior magi. He is part of Minalan's circle during the recovery period following the wars, continuing his thaumaturgical research at the Vanador bouleuterion.
The Mad Mage of Sevendor
Taren works closely with Minalan and Lady Varen on a major enchantment project commissioned by the Alka Alon. He is present at the war councils preparing for the eventual assault on Darkfaller and contributes to the preparations for the Merwyni campaign. His relationship with Lady Varen continues to deepen, and he becomes involved in Minalan's theoretical work on masa energy and its relationship to the rotation of the planet.
Marshal Arcane
Taren is heavily involved in planning and executing the Darkfaller rescue operation, serving as Minalan's go-to expert on battlefield enchantments and magical weaponry. He analyzes the effectiveness of various spells against the Paranchek spiders and develops creative solutions for the assault. On a personal level, Taren confides in Minalan his confusion and uncertainty about his growing relationship with the Alka Alon Emissary Lady Varen, showing unexpected vulnerability beneath his usual calm professionalism.
Preceptor
Taren is Minalan's most critical collaborator in preparing the magical assault on Darkfaller. He masters Minalan's newly invented dimensional portal system to manage the mass troop deployment through the Snowflake, working under intense pressure on the day of battle. His personal relationship with Lady Varen deepens, and Minalan reflects thoughtfully on the strange path the once-solitary thaumaturge has found into genuine romance. Taren is also outspoken at the Beryen Council, challenging the Alka Alon directly about withholding ancient knowledge from humanity.
Practical Adept
Taren is a prominent voice at the Alka Alon council, sharply challenging the Emissaries on their centuries-long withholding of ancient knowledge from humanity. He argues passionately that the denial of the Constructed Intelligences contributed to four hundred years of human ignorance, and accuses the Alka Alon of making that choice without giving humanity any say in the matter. His relationship with Lady Varen continues, and Varen clings to his arm throughout the tense council meeting. Alya describes Taren as likely to fail at diplomacy but try his best.
