Tuaa Folauga

Warrior-scientist, Memory Ghost

The Mad Mage of Sevendor

Who he was. The oldest human relative Minalan carries, a Lyran of the era when humanity's most distant humanoid ancestors served the Orion Republic. The memory finds him at an outpost under a triple-sun sky at the end of a long war between the Orions and the invading Paranchek (giant intelligent arachnoid bioweapons). A quantum physicist specializing in dimensional effects of singularities and masa radiation, he was pressed into nine years of brutal mercenary service after his wife Anka and their children were incinerated in a Morlanthan fleet attack on his homeworld. His friend and commander Tuaa Fouvale persuades him to flee with the Lyran Commonwealth to Maldek and resume research under the patronage of the noble houses. Voice: cold scientific rigor, grim cynicism, bottomless grief. "I have no vocation but vengeance, now."

Book 14.5 (Mad Mage): When Minalan's sister Ladra corners him half-mad over her son Larask's abduction, Folauga's memory "provided the sympathy and understanding that I was challenged to supply, the long-dead warrior spoke sincere words of solace that seemed to mollify Ladra more than my dutiful filial assurances did." When Mycin Amana reveals the Horror of Darkfaller, Folauga is dominant in Minalan's head and instantly recognizes the creatures as Orion-built Paranchek, providing a complete tactical dossier in a heartbeat. He also nudges Minalan toward masa energy as the missing factor in the snowstone-spell equations.

Book 15 (Marshal Arcane): Rides the Darkfaller raid as the ghost giving Minalan "a scientist's ability to observe the situation dispassionately and objectively." When the giant Paranchek emerges he supplies the tactical counter:

Everyone pick a leg. Except for its belly and its eyes, they are the weakest portion of that thing.

His vengeful spirit descends again during the Merwyni Paranchek engagement.

Book 16 (Preceptor): His "relentless fight against the Orions and their vassals gave me the real-world experience of a ruthless tactician" while Minalan plans the final Darkfaller campaign. His memory "thrilled at the sight" of Paranchek falling on the Enshadowed defenders.

Book 17 (Practical Adept): His memories of a radio telescope surface at Wenshar; his experience on a giant insect mount is one of several non-human mounts Minalan has vicarious memory of. Explicitly not the source of the "Fly at once" ploy.

Physical Description

Tuaa Folauga: an ancient Lyran warrior-scientist from a triple-sun world (two yellow, one red-giant). Humanoid with subtly non-human proportions. Grim, weathered, grief-lined face. Wears the practical gear of a quantum-physicist-turned-mercenary-commander: a functional officer's uniform with battered armor plates, a sidearm, and a specialist's field bag. Setting: a fortified outpost at the edge of a red-giant desert, bioengineered arachnoid Paranchek visible in the middle distance. Unbearable grief under a cold scientific rigor; the ghost of a man whose wife and children were incinerated in a fleet attack.
