The feared magical enforcement body established by King Kamaklavan after the Conquest. For four centuries, its black-and-white checkered cloaks were symbols of dread โ magi could be fined, imprisoned, or have their Talent destroyed.
The Royal Censorate of Magic was instituted by King Kamaklavan almost immediately after his Conquest, as a tool to oversee and suppress the conquered Magelords of the Empire. Its agents wore distinctive black-and-white checkered cloaks and operated under direct Royal Charter. For four centuries it was the instrument by which magical practice was regulated, restricted, and punished across the Five Duchies. The sight of a checkered cloak was enough to freeze the blood of any mage.
At its height the Censorate banned entire categories of enchantment, burned out the magical Talent of practitioners, and imprisoned or executed those who defied it. The political and economic repression it imposed stunted magical civilization for generations. It was formally abolished in the era of Minalan the Spellmonger. Its remnants reformed under the Duke of Merwyn's patronage as the Arcane Order of Nablus.
