The penal companies raised to hold the Wilderlands frontier -- thieves, murderers, rapists and debtors who swear vows, forswear all previous feuds and allegiances, and answer only to their commander, the Warlord, and the King.
The Iron Ring companies gathered at Tudry through the winter, drilling for the day the cold winds stilled. Their ranks were filled from the gaols: the sad collection of thieves, murderers, rapists and debtors who enlisted in exchange for pardon and a place on the frontier.
On enlistment the men swore vows and foreswore any previous feuds and allegiances; thereafter they answered to their commander, then the Warlord, and no lesser person than the King himself. The first company was cobbled together from those most eager for the wilds -- among them Sir Sastan, the first volunteer, under Captain Antrig.
