Character · Possible Retcon
Warmage states that among the three Gilmoran warmagi only Curmor and Astyral were related (distant cousins), explicitly excluding Mavone. Thaumaturge later shows Mavone referring to Astyral as his cousin, directly contradicting the earlier text.
In Warmage, when the narrator reflects on the trio of Gilmoran warmagi (Curmor, Mavone, and Astyral), the narration is explicit:
Contrary to popular belief, though they looked similar, the Gilmorans weren't brothers. Only he and Astyral were related – distant cousins. They just liked to work together and shared similar tastes.Narrator, Warmage
The pronoun ‘he’ refers to Curmor, who is speaking. This passage explicitly rules out kinship between Mavone and either of the other two.
In Thaumaturge, however, Mavone teases Astyral about a romantic interest with a line attributed as ‘Mavone teased his cousin,’ implying Mavone and Astyral are cousins — directly contradicting Warmage. A third reference in Marshal Arcane has the narrator say ‘Astyral’s cousin?’ when Curmor arrives, confirming the Curmor-Astyral relationship but adding nothing about Mavone.
The Thaumaturge attribution is most likely an authorial slip, but it could reflect an expanded kinship established later in the series. Resolution requires author clarification or a possible retcon of the Thaumaturge line. Mavone’s relatives field has been updated to reflect Astyral (Cousin) per Thaumaturge as the most directly attributed source pending resolution.
