The Flight from Boval

Rescue ยท Book 1 ยท Spellmonger

Minalan's evacuation of the surviving Boval refugees out of the dying valley, eastward over the high passes ahead of the gurvani host.

When the Boval Vale molopor opened, Sevendor lay weeks in the future and Master Minalan was still spellmonger to a rural barony with no escape plan and a Censor on his heels. The flight east, with women, children, livestock, and the few warbands his neighbours could spare, became Book 1's long retreat.

Minalan held the rear with a half-trained warmagic toolkit and the green witchstone he had inherited under duress, throwing improvised spell-traps at the pursuers and bleeding the gurvani vanguard until the column reached the Castali border. Tyndal, Sire Cei, and a few neighbours who refused to abandon him formed the iron core of the escort.

By the time the survivors stumbled into Wilderhall, Minalan had become, by accident and necessity, a magelord and the seed of every later war coalition.
