The Flight from Boval

When the invasion of the Boval Vale could no longer be halted, Master Minalan orchestrated the escape of the surviving refugees out of the dying valley. The Vale had been besieged by a gurvani host numbering in the tens of thousands, and after the fall of Boval Castle the only route out lay through a portal opened by the Aronin, whose brilliant magical strike bought the column its window of escape.

Minalan lingered to witness the Aronin's stand as long as he could, stepping through the shrinking disk at the last moment. Tyndal and the surviving warmagi passed through ahead of him, and Penny even led Minalan's horse, Traveler, through the portal by the reins.

The refugees emerged far outside the Dead God's malevolent influence, in the backwoods Alshari fiefdom around the small village of Duprin. From there the survivors continued eastward toward Castal, and by the time the dispatches reached Wilderhall, Minalan had become, by accident and necessity, a magelord and the seed of every later war coalition.
