The Remeran magical academy — the other surviving daughter of the Old Imperial tradition and Pentandra's alma mater.
Alar Academy is the principal magical academy of Remere, sister institution to Inarion and the other of the two surviving full academies of the Kingdom. It carries the Remeran strain of the Old Imperial (Perwynese) tradition, with an emphasis on high thaumaturgy and the formal scholarly arts. Its students are drawn heavily from Remeran Imperial families and from ambitious aspirants who pass its entrance examinations; admission is competitive, and its standards produce magi of notable depth and versatility.
Governance is by a body of academy masters with a strict policy on student life, including residency in cell-like scholar's quarters on campus — though wealthy students such as Pentandra flouted these rules by renting suites in the surrounding town and earning the masters' ire. The academy proved willing to reject applicants on character grounds: Lorcus's warmage associate noted that Alar refused her entry after a barn-exploding experiment with nitrates.
Alar trained Pentandra and a large cohort of the Remeran magi who later joined the Arcane Orders, making it (with Inarion) one of the two wellsprings of orthodox magical learning in the Kingdom. It appears chiefly as background in Court Wizard, Knights Magi, and the various Pentandra-focused passages, and represents the Remeran pole of academic magic against Inarion's Castali one.
