The Umbra

Region ยท Independent

The black sphere of blight at the heart of the former gurvani realm โ€” seat first of the Dead God Sheruel and then of Korbal the Necromancer and his Nemovorti.

The Umbra is the inner, fully shadowed region of the Dead God's dominion, a roughly spherical zone of magical corruption centered on Boval Vale in the deep Mindens. Within its horizon the sun never truly shines, scrying is impossible, Otherworld communication is blocked, and a sourceless weight of dread saturates every waking moment. Only natavia (native Callidoran species) survive within; importasta crops, livestock, roses, and ultimately humans die or go mad. The Umbra expanded steadily outward during Sheruel's ascendancy, fed by mass sacrifice of the prisoners brought up the Timber Road.

The Umbra's origin lies in the Dragonfall and the rise of Sheruel, the gurvani shaman whose brain, encased in a massive block of irionite, achieved near-divine magical power and launched the genocidal invasion. After Sheruel's defeat and binding at Olum Seheri, the region passed to Korbal the Necromancer and his Nemovorti lieutenants, who ruled from the restored Alka Alon city of Olum Seheri on its drowned island. The political structure became a grim parody of a feudal court: Nemovorti-held legions, Soulless generals, enslaved draugen, and gurvani auxiliaries, all enforcing Korbal's will.

Following Korbal's own defeat, rulership of the Umbra and its gurvani subjects passed, at least nominally, to King Ashakarl, the gurvani monarch with whom Minalan eventually negotiated an awkward non-aggression understanding. The Umbra itself has never been cleansed; it remains a permanent scar on the map of the northwest, bordered by the Penumbra, watched by the Magelaw, and forbidden to all but the most determined (or doomed) travelers. Its signature ruin, Olum Seheri, remains both gurvani capital and Nemovorti redoubt.
