Avalanche

Staff

Minalan's late-saga personal anti-dragon and anti-construct artefact. Built by Carmella to channel the Magolith's power through a hand-held delivery system, Avalanche is the heavy-weapon counterpart to Twilight in Minalan's combat loadout -- summoned alongside Twilight at the Election of Doge Mirkandar to demonstrate the cost of opposing him.

Avalanche is Minalan's late-saga personal heavy-weapon artefact: a hand-held delivery system for Magolith-class power, built by Carmella as the counterpart to Twilight in his combat loadout. Where Twilight is the precision close-combat blade, Avalanche is the city-leveler — intended primarily for anti-dragon and anti-construct work, but usable against any target on the battlefield.

Construction

Avalanche is a hand-held artefact that channels power directly from the awakened Magolith. The pairing exploits the Magolith's post-Vanador sentience: the Handmaiden actively manages the power-flow, allowing Avalanche to deliver levels of arcane force that would otherwise require sustained ritual preparation. The artefact's name comes from its primary attack mode — a sustained avalanche of layered force-spells that smothers a target's defences before the killing strike lands.

Deployment

Avalanche is reserved for the largest threats. Minalan unstowed Avalanche from a hoxter at the Election of Doge Mirkandar, summoning Twilight to one hand and Avalanche to the other simultaneously, with the Magolith pulsing warningly over his shoulder. The display was the signal to Captain Pratt and the assembled Electors that the Spellmonger himself was the new contender for the Doge's seat — and that opposing him would not be survivable. Pratt yielded without crossing swords.

Avalanche's deployment in the late books has been deliberately limited — Minalan reserves it for situations where the cost-of-opposition signal needs to be unambiguous, since most of its potential targets cannot survive its activation.
