Staff
Minalan's late-saga personal anti-dragon and anti-construct artefact. Built by Carmella to channel the Magolith's power through a hand-held delivery system, Avalanche is the heavy-weapon counterpart to Twilight in Minalan's combat loadout -- summoned alongside Twilight at the Election of Doge Mirkandar to demonstrate the cost of opposing him.
Avalanche, formerly known as Blizzard, is Minalan's signature personal warstaff and primary heavy-combat weapon across the saga. Minalan created and named Blizzard during his early career; he later transformed it through an infusion of divine magic — with Briga, Goddess of Fire, present — and renamed the reborn staff Avalanche. In combat it is paired with the mageblade Twilight.
Minalan built and named Blizzard during his tenure at Sevendor, completing it shortly before Briga’s Day and demonstrating it to the Great Hall at dinner. He described it as designed to kill people and break things — a direct combat weapon housing an advanced array of offensive and defensive enchantments. The staff was stored in a hoxter pocket and could be summoned to hand instantly.
I named it Blizzard, in keeping with my snowy motif, and gave a brief (but non-lethal) demonstration of what it could do. It was an impressive weapon of especial power and elegance. It was also perhaps the single most powerful magical weapon humanity had ever created.Minalan, High Mage
Minalan directed a sphere of divine energy through Tanno Amberil into the full length of Blizzard, transforming it utterly. The weirwood shaft became glassy and translucent; the staff grew longer, more like an Alka Alon dueling spear than a quarterstaff; and the existing paraclete within was altered into something more refined. Briga was present throughout, initially sceptical (“You’ve never worked with divine power before”), but conceded after witnessing the result. On completing the transformation, Minalan pronounced the new name in Alka Alon.
Briga exhaled, when the impromptu spell was done and the divine energy was consumed by the process. The battle staff gleamed from end to end, now, a slender and more balanced shaft with a more pronounced, almost crystalline staff head that was vaguely pointed. The paraclete throbbed within.Minalan, Marshal Arcane
“If the last incarnation was Blizzard, then this is … Avalanche,” I decided. “I name thee Avalanche!” I pronounced in Alka Alon.Minalan, Marshal Arcane
By the events of Preceptor, Minalan reflects on Avalanche as an impossibly potent weapon with a paraclete capable of managing a staggering array of destructive and defensive spells.
My battlestaff was completely transformed by divine magic into an impossibly potent weapon with an incredible paraclete within. It was as long as a spear, the weirwood altered into a kind of alabaster that gave it a unique shine, and I could manifest any number of physical weapons at the elegant head of it.Minalan, Preceptor
Avalanche is reserved for the largest threats. Minalan brought it to hand at the Election of Doge Mirkandar, pairing it with Twilight as a signal to Captain Pratt and the assembled Electors that the Spellmonger himself was the new contender for the Doge’s seat — and that opposing him would not be survivable. Pratt yielded without crossing swords.
Avalanche’s deployment in the late books has otherwise been deliberately limited. Minalan reserves it for situations where the cost-of-opposition signal needs to be unambiguous, since most of its potential targets cannot survive its activation.
