Minalan's submersible vessel -- an Imperial-era artefact recovered and refitted as a Spellmonger working ship. Used in Practical Adept for the deep operations beneath the Citadel of the Doge in Farise and (in lore) for the long-rumoured voyage to recover the Lost Egg.
The Junebug is Minalan's personal submersible-class vessel — an Imperial-era artefact, recovered and refitted by him with Magelaw enchanters during the lull between Marshal Arcane and Practical Adept. It is one of the few working examples of late-Magocracy underwater technology in the modern era.
The Junebug is a small, compact submersible — capable of operating both underwater and (with the right magical lift) airborne — with seating for a small crew, a shielded cabin, and a thaumaturgical drive based on principles closer to the Vundel propulsion-spells than to anything in the Imperial library. Minalan keeps it stowed in a hoxter pocket large enough for the entire vessel, then unstows it when needed. The whole design is unmistakably alien even by the standards of recovered Imperial relics; it predates much of what the Magocracy retained as their architectural inheritance.
In Practical Adept Minalan brought the Junebug out on the rooftop of the Citadel of the Doge in Farise after the election, having stowed it in a hoxter for the purpose. The vessel was the working tool for Minalan's subsequent deep-water Farisi operations: scouting the harbour shoals, inspecting the Vundel-frequented seabed beyond Sangsara, and (per quiet rumour through the rest of the series) reaching the resting site of the Lost Egg.
The Junebug was recovered by Minalan and his Magelaw enchantment team from a pre-Inundation site in the late books, with significant contribution from Heeth the Arcanist's research into Imperial archaeology and from the Karshak's metallurgical expertise. Lilastien identified it on sight as a colonial-era recovery vehicle — the kind of thing the original colonial expedition had brought with them. Its name, Minalan freely admits, is a nickname rather than its original Imperial designation, which has been lost.
The Junebug's existence quietly confirms that the Five Duchies retain access to Imperial technology far more sophisticated than the public Magocracy ever displayed. It is one of the assets that distinguishes Minalan from his peer monarchs: where Tavard inherits Castali infrastructure and Anguin inherits the Coral Throne, Minalan inherits the working artefacts of the original colony.
