The Snowflake

Molopor ยท Molopor

The molopor at the heart of Sevendor mountain โ€” a vast living lattice of snowstone around an active rift, source of the barony's wealth and the Magelaw's strategic reserve of arcane power.

The Snowflake is the name Minalan gives the vast, living lattice of snowstone that grew around an active molopor deep beneath Sevendor mountain. It formed when Minalan, desperate during Minalyan's difficult birth, invoked Briga over the active rift โ€” and the goddess answered, transmuting the entire mountain's living rock into snowstone in a single thaumaturgic event on Yule.

The Snowflake is both geological feature and arcane resource. Its lattice amplifies and stores magical work on a scale nothing else on Callidore matches, turning Sevendor into the wealthiest magical polity in the Five Duchies overnight. Sympathy stones tuned to the Snowflake become conduits for its power; by Arcanist, Minalan is using one in the head of the Magolith to draw on the Snowflake's endless reserves in the field. In the assault on Yellin, as the Enshadowed wards finally give way:

The Handmaiden within the Magolith opened the connection it had to the Snowflake, away in Sevendor, and borrowed the raw power of the molopor to add to the assault... their sorcery had proven no better defense against it than if they'd been gurvani shamans.Arcanist

The Snowflake is as much a character as a place. It interacts with the Magolith, with the Handmaiden enneagram, and with Minalan himself. It is also the source of the snowstone that humanity owes the Vundel as its rent on Callidore โ€” the commercial and diplomatic linchpin of the later books.
