Knights of Nablus

Warmage Order

The official magical order of Merwyn and Vore — warmage successor to the Royal Censorate, wearing red-and-white checkered cloaks under Commander Aleem before its Cormeeran schism.

The Knights of Nablus are the official magical order of Merwyn and Vore, formed when the surviving Censors of the abolished Royal Censorate of Magic regrouped at the old commandary at Nablus under the Duke of Merwyn's patronage. They exchanged the black-and-white checkered cloak of the Censorate for red-and-white checks — partly rebranding, partly a wary acknowledgment that the fearsome old association could not be escaped. As Tyndal drily observes in Shadowmage:

In Merwyn and Vore, they've transformed into the official magical order of the duchies, the Knights of Nablus, and thus wear red and white checks. Far more stylish.Tyndal, Shadowmage

The Knights are a proper warmage order. By the time of The Mad Mage of Sevendor they muster roughly twenty high magi, led by Commander Aleem (later styled Grandmaster), a former Censor whom Minalan found "quite congenial, if guarded." They possess approximately twenty-two witchstones among their members. In Footwizard and Hedgewitch, Prince Tavard quietly hired them as mercenary high magi in his own war against the Magelaw — "a powerful and prominent political opponent of the kingdom," in Pentandra's wary assessment.

By treaty, the Knights administer magic across Merwyn and Vore without interference from the Castalshari Arcane Orders. Their uneasy political position — commanded by the Duke of Merwyn's increasingly authoritarian regime — eventually triggered the schism that produced the Arcane Order of Saviesa, when Commander Aleem and most of his officers defected with Count Andrevar's rebellion.
