New Leiden

New Leiden was the capital city of the island of Perwyn and the civic heart of the Colonial Magocracy. As Minalan explains from the colonial archives: "Perwyn was the seed that sprouted all of the colonies, an island with enough arable land to support a significant population. As the colony's staging area, it was the conduit through which our ancestors passed before they settled across the colony. During the Colonial Era the great cities of Perwyn grew: Calcatalan, Stavoran, New Caerdydd, Barselon (from where the Sea Lords came), Brighton, and most of all New Leiden. New Leiden was the capital of the island and managed its civil affairs."

The city was home to the New Leiden Medical Center, a miraculous colonial-era institution that Lilastien — who once served there — recalls with deep nostalgia: "The drugs, the medical devices, the surgery, the laboratories . . . New Leiden Medical Center was a miraculous place, back during the Colonization. I'd like to re-create it as much as possible, in Henga." It was also where she treated a Karshak named Umank for burns suffered in a fire involving the Enshadowed and one Charles Avital — an event that has reverberated across three thousand years.

New Leiden, like the whole of Perwyn, was lost when the island sank at the end of the Magocracy. Its archives, its hospitals, and all its records vanished with it. Everything that survives of its civic memory survives through Lilastien, scattered colonial installations like Unger Station, and the rare Perwyneese records preserved by the Remeran Privy Council tradition.
