The ancient molopor beneath Boval Castle โ uncovered by Sire Koucey's ancestors, used by Minalan to evacuate the Bovali, and then seized by Sheruel as the source of the Umbra's dark power.
The Boval Vale molopor is the ancient rift beneath Boval Castle, whose existence explained the wealth of House Brandmount and the peculiar magical character of the vale. Sire Koucey's ancestors took it by treachery from the gurvani who guarded it โ a blood-debt the Dead God later exacted personally. Its cavern is the one Koucey became obsessed with protecting in Spellmonger, to the point of imprisoning Pentandra for trying to investigate it.
Minalan and Pentandra use the molopor, with a sex-magic ritual on the torus-stone, to power the portal that evacuates thousands of Bovali refugees to safety as Sheruel's horde overruns the castle. After the fall, the molopor becomes the heart of the Umbra โ Sheruel's power is grown around it, and later Korbal's fortress-laboratory at Olum Seheri sits atop its continued outflow. In Arcanist Tyndal takes its scale in stride:
He has dragons, goblins, armies and a molopor. He's taken one city and ruined countless refuges. Has he not a sufficiency of force?Tyndal, Arcanist
The Boval Vale molopor is less structured than the Snowflake โ raw power without Sevendor's lattice to shape it โ which is part of why the Umbra corrupts the land around it rather than enriching it.
