Handmaiden

Paraclete

Necromancer

The Handmaiden is the ancient enneagram installed inside Minalan's Magolith during the aftermath of the Battle of Olum Seheri. She is drawn from the Ghost Rock vein beneath the necropolis β€” the most magically potent deposit on Callidore β€” and embedded by Alka Alon and humani craft into the green orb that will sit atop Minalan's baculus for the remainder of the series.

She is not a programmed construct. She is a preserved mind, conscious, opinionated, and fiercely defensive of whoever her bearer names her charge. In book-terms she is classed as a paraclete β€” a technical word meaning advocate, companion, or spirit-defender β€” and she behaves like one.

Thaumaturge

Minalan begins to understand the Handmaiden's true nature in Thaumaturge. Her presence is ancient and her capacities significantly exceed what a mere stone-bound construct could offer. When Moudrost the Seamage learns of her during a visit, Minalan attempts to deflect:

That is merely what we call the paraclete that was installed in my Magolith. I had hoped that no mention of either the Handmaiden's or the Celestial Mother's enneagrams would arise with Moudrost. Lilastien had warned me against such things.Minalan, Thaumaturge

The implication lands hard: the Handmaiden and the Celestial Mother are paired β€” the Handmaiden in the Magolith, the Celestial Mother in the Snowflake β€” and both are politically sensitive enough that their existence is deliberately concealed from the Vundel's emissaries. Lilastien is appalled that Moudrost has connected the dots.

Arcanist

The Handmaiden takes on a more active role in Arcanist. She is the presence Minalan feels through his baculus, usually quiet and friendly β€” but when the goddess Briga imposes on Alya's recovery without permission, the Handmaiden does not recognise divine authority:

The Handmaiden was more aggressive in its judgement than Insight. Once the glowing green sphere hovered above my wife, pulsating with the distinctive thaumaturgic purr it emitted when the ancient enneagram was working, it seemed to act with more purpose than usual. It was as if the Handmaiden resented her charge being interfered with, no matter what divine pedigree was involved.Minalan, Arcanist

In the assault on Yellin she also reveals her strategic capacity, opening the sympathy-stone link inside the Magolith to channel raw power from the Snowflake β€” and through it, indirectly, from the Celestial Mother installed within:

The Handmaiden within the Magolith opened the connection it had to the Snowflake, away in Sevendor, and borrowed the raw power of the molopor to add to the assault... their sorcery had proven no better defense against it than if they'd been gurvani shamans.Arcanist

The Mad Mage of Sevendor

In The Mad Mage of Sevendor, the ancient beast Aza'Methet β€” housed briefly in the Snowflake β€” deems the Handmaiden's paraclete architecture "inadequate" and, with indulgent disgust, directs her to rearrange her own fundamental connections into a more responsive form:

The rudimentary control the Celestial Mother's enneagram provided was inadequate, to its estimation. It was not being efficiently employed. With a sense of indulgent disgust, the beast directed the Handmaiden to use its fundamental powers to rearrange the crude arcane connections into a more responsive architecture. The Mad Mage of Sevendor

The restructuring is quietly profound. The Handmaiden that emerges from Aza'Methet's tinkering is a more capable and tightly-coupled instrument than the one that entered the Magolith at Olum Seheri, and the Magolith's capabilities through the remaining books reflect the upgrade.
