The Magolith

The Magolith is the green orb at the head of Minalan's baculus, crafted of Alka Alon make around an ancient enneagram known as the Handmaiden. Through a sympathy stone it is permanently linked to the Snowflake at Sevendor. It detaches at will, hovers beside or above its bearer, and acts with its own judgment — the enneagram within is a conscious presence, not a programmed construct. In combat it strikes on its own initiative; in conversation it purrs softly in the thaumaturgic spectrum; in a crisis it draws raw molopor-power from Sevendor across a continent.

The Handmaiden's presence is what makes the Magolith more than a tool. She has her own judgment, and she defends her charge. In Arcanist, when Briga herself imposes on Alya's recovery, the Magolith refuses to defer even to the goddess:

The Handmaiden was more aggressive in its judgement than Insight. Once the glowing green sphere hovered above my wife, pulsating with the distinctive thaumaturgic purr it emitted when the ancient enneagram was working, it seemed to act with more purpose than usual. It was as if the Handmaiden resented her charge being interfered with, no matter what divine pedigree was involved.Minalan, Arcanist

Minalan notes the Magolith's quieter moments too:

My connection with my baculus — or, more properly, the ancient enneagram my magical stick was imbued with — was always pretty quiet and friendly, compared to, say, dancing with the Handmaiden. But when Bova gave her benediction to Alya, there was a wave of magical power that emanated from the goddess that sent my baculus into hysterics.Minalan, Arcanist

The Handmaiden was drawn from the Ghost Rock vein beneath Olum Seheri — the most magically potent deposit on Callidore — and installed inside the Magolith during the Battle of Olum Seheri. In the field the Magolith can open its link to the Snowflake and draw the molopor's endless reserves into a single strike. In the assault on Yellin, as the Enshadowed wards finally gave way:

The Handmaiden within the Magolith opened the connection it had to the Snowflake, away in Sevendor, and borrowed the raw power of the molopor to add to the assault... their sorcery had proven no better defense against it than if they'd been gurvani shamans.Arcanist

The Magolith is unique — there is no other artefact of comparable capability on Callidore — and it is the single greatest advantage Minalan personally carries into the war against Korbal and the Enshadowed.
