Martin Fitzgerald Andrews

Lieutenant Colonel, Callidore Colonial Exploration Corps

Footwizard

Who he was. Lieutenant Colonel Martin Fitzgerald Andrews of the Colonial Exploration Corps, a human military officer from roughly seven hundred years back in Callidore's colonial past, himself a war veteran of Terra ("he had always been hesitant about starting a family on Earth, after the war, that was one reason he had emigrated"). Minalan's memory-scene finds him piloting a Piper 112 aircar with his biologist wife Angela, a Colonial Science Foundation researcher; for three pre-suspension years he had surveyed Callidore's virgin continents as part of the twenty-year pre-terraforming survey and sat on the first-contact team that met the Alka Alon, the Vundel, and the Met Sakinsa. Voice: orderly, practical, honorable, patriotic, kind, hopeful, good-humored. Minalan: "He reminds me a lot of me." Unique knowledge: piloting the R-71 Junebug and other colonial aircars, Colonial Defense Force weaponry (plasma rifles), CDF protocol, Old High Perwyneese (Latin), colonial archives, Terran amphibious-with-air-cover military tactics.

Book 13 (Footwizard): Immediate combat use. Minalan wields the plasma rifle: "Andrews had carried one for years, after all." "Andrews' memory told me how to adjust the beam settings for a more precise shot. I took careful aim, and as the gurvan squinted in the morning sun, I blew his face off." Andrews also identifies a storeroom of C3, C4, and C5 colonial back-ups, supplies the CDF caution about admitting alien entities, and co-authors (with Palgrave) the tablet-display trick that moves the Anghysbel evacuees.

Book 14.5 (Mad Mage): Minalan's favorite and most-praised ghost, "perhaps my distant ancestor from the Colonial Period." His amphibious-assault-with-air-cover thinking shapes the Darkfaller battle plan. He finds magic uncanny, prefers tapers to magelights, and is "a surprisingly good horseman." Andrews also inspires a lengthy and intimate meal with Alya in the Spellgarden tower ("Andrews' mind returned to the intense feeling he had for his own beloved wife"), identifies a ceremonial CDF dagger Lord Commander Aleem gifts Minalan, and directs the formation of a paid standing guard in the Wilderlands.

Book 15 (Marshal Arcane): His memories are what let Minalan interpret Getafix's cryptic line on the reactivated portal ("That he can only open it under certain extraordinary circumstances"), and he recognizes the human-architectural grafts onto ancient Alka Alon ruins in the Karshak city.

Book 16 (Preceptor): Helps negotiate with the Vundel/Seamagi; Ariel holds a complete copy of "the initial New Horizon/Vundel agreement" that Andrews helped negotiate in a small way. Supplies the forbidden-weapon context when Minalan considers raiding ancient CDF sites.

Book 17 (Practical Adept): His arc peaks. At the Wenshar CDF underground outpost he recognizes the prefab architecture, the Raytheon-Siemens L21 plasma rifles, the lorries, and "the stubby form of a R-71 Junebug. He had flown one for over a decade as he had trysted around the virgin backcountry of Callidore on various missions for the Exploration and Survey Corps." When Gareth delivers the Junebug to the Doge's Citadel roof in Farise, "finally launching the Junebug into the sky brought me a level of excitement I hadn't known I was capable of. Andrews's knowledge of the vehicle informed my fingers as they instructed the controls to lift us free of the Citadel's roof." On landing:

I liked to fly, I realized, as much as Andrews had enjoyed it.

Also performs the ancient hand-clap entry ritual at the outpost ("I clapped my hands together, as ancient ritual required, according to Andrews' memories. 'We're in!'") and translates the CDF sub-agency motto "We Watch The World."
