Lady of Anferny, Bride of Viscount Tyndal
Lady Tandine of Anferny is introduced through her reputation at the Midmarket:
Lady Tandine is as bold as a knight, and fights as well as one, too.
Her first on-page appearance is during the biberon incident, where she rides up furious at Tyndal's plan to slay a local creature. Summons a Tal Alon llama-cavalry patrol to drive the biberon off with her signal horn, then rides between Minalan and Tyndal back to Anferny as their guide.
Oversees Lord Kanlan's ceremony and acts as de-facto chatelaine for her invalid father. Her introduction to Tyndal says:
I am Lady Tandine of Anferny. Daughter of Lord Kanlan of Anferny. My rule is law, here.
On his dragon-slaying boast:
My lord, I do not appreciate being lied to. Empty boasts do not impress me, nor do dishonest knights. Think me not a gullible maiden!
On her own skills:
I can do both as well as any knight. Try me on the listfield with lance and shield, if you doubt that, my lord. Or in the eric, with longsword, greatsword, axe, or mace. Or match your skill against mine at the butts, and I will show you what a bow can do. My lord father was determined, early on, to ensure that I was the equal of any man who asked for my hand. Or his better.
In Anferny inheritance is by merit regardless of sex:
In Anferny, my lord, there are so few people that we elevate the best among us to the highest positions, regardless of our sex. It is the custom of the land. Hence my inheritance of the domain, and not my brother's.
She joins Tyndal's patrols hunting gurvani after the main expedition, insists on crossing lances at a tournament, and stands up forcefully to the men of Anferny to support Minalan's evacuation order. Seeks Minalan's counsel about her own heart:
My own heart? What does my heart have to do with the matter? When he came here, I was secure in my future, if limited. I had my patrimony, my duties, a well-ordered life. Now I find I am to be a refugee, landless, without purpose.
By book's end she and Tyndal are openly courting:
That relationship, at least, had blossomed in the closing weeks of the summer.
Tandine does not appear on-page in Hedgewitch, but she is the constant subject of Tyndal's pining in Vanador. To Rondal says:
When Tandine flares her nostrils, I know she's getting excited. When Tandine draws a bow and gets that intense look in her eye, it's magnetic.
To Gatina, recounted through Rondal:
Her name is Tandine. Wilderlord. Not a mage. But he's smitten.
Tyndal calls her "Tandy" privately. Still trapped in Anghysbel behind the jevolar.
Appears only by letter. Nattia the Sky Captain reports to Minalan: "I had but two other messages to deliver, from the Lord and Lady of Anferny, respectively. I gave the lady's letter to Tyndal at his keep on my way here. He was quite pleased to hear from Lady Tandine." Confirms she is now formally Lady of Anferny, her father having yielded the title after Lilastien's surgery.
Tandine arrives in Vanador with the Anghysbel evacuation caravan, riding in the second Beast (mechanical vehicle) with her invalid father Lord Kanlan. Tyndal drops everything to find her the moment he hears:
Enough chatter, where is she, Gareth? Tandine! Where is Tandine? I know she's with you!
Gareth describes her to Pentandra says:
That key is a sword, and she uses it as well as he does, I'd wager. You'll like Tandine, Pentandra. She's plucky.
Shortly afterward Tyndal reappears with "his arm wrapped protectively around Lady Tandine, who seemed overwhelmed by the size of Vanador and its unusual hue. 'I've asked Tandine to marry me and she's said yes! Her father even gave his blessing!'" Tandine looked pleased but uncomfortable.
Lord Kanlan, now elderly and requiring special accommodation for travel, arrives at Vanador with the Anghysbel evacuation caravan β his daughter Tandine riding with him in the second Beast vehicle. His yielding of the Anferny title to Tandine is formalized after Lilastien's surgery; by this book he is essentially in retirement.
Tyndal's wife and Lady of Callierd. The Golden Goblin opens during their first Yule together as a married couple. Daughter of old Kanlan of Anferny.
Less politically schooled than Gatina but learning fast, she takes responsibility for the resettlement of the Anfernite refugees -- her own people, evacuated south by Minalan ahead of a volcanic eruption that would have killed them all -- while Tyndal is away on his mission. Tyndal trusts her with Callierd in his absence: "When I married you, Callierd became your responsibility, just as your people became mine."
Rondal suggests Gatina teach her court politics and the network of magelords she now has to deal with as the wife of a Viscount of the Magelaw.

Wedding-day description: "clad in Wilderlands style, wearing a traditional embroidered flowing wool dress over a splendidly white linen underdress. It was as simple as Gatina's was complex, lovingly created by her female relatives as a testament to her noble house and abandoned home. Her head was bare, save a single fillet of silver to denote her station as a Wilderlord. She wore little cosmetics, I think, but Pentandra had supplied enchantments and glamours to make her appear a radiant beauty to all who saw her." Earthy Wilderlands color palette contrasts with Gatina's Imperial black satin. Dazed, overwhelmed by the scale of the wedding.
