Anghysbel

Region ยท The Magelaw

A hidden valley in the far north where a buried jevolar suppresses all magic โ€” preserving relics, refugees, and secrets from the founding of the colony on Callidore.

Anghysbel is a secluded valley roughly nineteen miles long and seven wide, hidden at the northern edge of Alshar beyond the Alkali Wastes, the trackless steppes, and the nearly impassable Kuline Mountains. The journey from Vorone takes some ninety days by traditional means. Its defining feature is a natural jevolar, the anti-magical opposite of a molopor, which suppresses rajira and all magical effect for many miles around. Geographically Anghysbel is volcanic and improbable: a warm geothermal lake, steaming springs, native flora that grow nowhere else, and a caldera-rimmed ecology described in Forseti's records as the "Northwest Reserve Caldera Zone."

Historically Anghysbel was briefly a settled Alshari fief. A medieval monk's pilgrimage account led a Duke of Alshar to send an expedition to verify its existence, an attempt at settlement followed, and as recently as seventy years before the present day a young "lord of Anghysbel" swore fealty at Wilderhall on his father's behalf. Since then, silence: the suppression of communication and magic around the valley severed it from the rest of the Duchy, and it slipped from general memory. Technically it still falls within Minalan's purview as Count Palatine of the Magelaw, inheriting the fealty pledged generations before.

The valley is the central setting of the expedition chronicled in Footwizard, where Minalan, Lilastien, Fondaras, and the sentient machine Forseti travel to Anghysbel to investigate an ancient pre-colonial installation and to make contact with the valley's unexpected inhabitants: exiled Alka Alon factions, surviving Kasari, long-isolated human settlers, and beings from the founding of Callidore itself. Refugees from Anghysbel (particularly Tal Alon) are later resettled in the Danz Valley of the Magelaw, travelling by portal from Tyr Moranan at the edge of the jevolar's horizon.
