Unger Station (Cave of the Ancients)

Place ยท Anghysbel

An ancient colonial geophysical research station carved into the rock of Anghysbel โ€” preserved intact since before the fall of Perwyn. Known to the local Kasari as the Cave of the Ancients.

Unger Station, formally the Dr. Hugo Unger Station for Geophysical Studies, was a colonial-era scientific installation built to monitor the Northwestern Reserve Active Caldera Zone โ€” the geothermal belt that underlies Anghysbel. It was planned as a Stage 3 field facility: a subterranean complex of nondescript grey corridors and indirectly lit chambers deliberately kept utilitarian rather than ceremonial, because the region was considered too geologically unstable for permanent habitation. Its ancillary observation posts scattered across the vale fed data back to the main station.

The Cave of the Ancients

The outer entry complex of Unger Station, set high on a rigorous climb a few miles from the Melleray settlement, is known to the Kasari of Melleray and the Anghysbel locals as the Cave of the Ancients. Externally it appears as a cave mouth sealed by a great door; the Kasari have used it as a patrol shelter for centuries, once memorably weathering a snowstorm inside its antechambers without ever understanding what lay deeper.

Functionally the Cave is the sally-point and depot of the Unger Station complex: a cache of colonial protective gear, vehicles (including the Beast that Gareth later used to ferry Fondaras across the Alkali Wastes), records, and emergency stores intended to allow research teams to survive the caldera zone. It is the chapter-named threshold (Footwizard, Chapter Eleven) at which the expedition first breaches the ancient seals and begins the exploration of what turns out to be Unger Station proper.

Operations and stewardship

Governance was, in its operational period, civil and scientific, under the ancient colonial administration that preceded the Magocracy; after the fall of Perwyn it passed out of human knowledge entirely and lay sealed for millennia, preserved by its construction and by the jevolar that shielded Anghysbel from arcane and technological attention alike. Lilastien, the Sorceress of Sartha Wood, was among the last living beings to remember its original purpose; the Kasari of Melleray had used its outer chambers as a storm-shelter for generations without understanding what they sheltered in. Lilastien remembers the wider colonial world the station served:

The drugs, the medical devices, the surgery, the laboratories... New Leiden Medical Center was a miraculous place, back during the Colonization. I'd like to re-create it as much as possible, in Henga.Lilastien, Footwizard

During the Footwizard expedition Minalan, Gareth and their companions gained access with Kasari guidance, and the station โ€” with its medical bay, archives, and colonial-era equipment โ€” became the expedition's central prize. It contained the records and protective gear that made possible the later colonial-tech missions of Thaumaturge and the books thereafter. Forseti, the Constructed Intelligence that joins the expedition, operates as the station's gatekeeper and teacher.

Significance

The discovery reframed the entire Spellmonger arc: from this point on, Minalan's war against Korbal becomes entangled with his inherited obligation to the Vundel and the Forsaken, with the Cave as the literal and symbolic threshold between the medieval present and the colonial past. Unger Station remains the single richest surviving cache of pre-Perwynese knowledge on the Dry.
