A vassal-race of the imprisoned Formless, confined to the caverns beneath Anghysbel and kept from escaping the jevolar by the Leshi who were planted there expressly to ward them.
The Kurja are a vassal-race of the Formless, confined to the caverns beneath the hidden valley of Anghysbel. In Footwizard Ameras names them among the charges of her line:
It is the third great charge of my line — after the molopor and the vault — keeping watch over the Kurja. The vassals of the Formless.Ameras, Footwizard
They are not denizens of the Deeps, despite their alien, sorcerous nature. The Kurja emerge from caverns within the Anghysbel caldera, and they cannot leave the vale — not through their own will, but through the vigilance of the Leshi, the magic-less kindred of the Met Sakinsa planted in Anghysbel expressly to ward them. As Bomoadua tells the expedition:
They ward the lands from the Kurja. When they emerge from their caverns, the Leshi and their servants keep them from leaving Anghysbel. That would be disastrous.Bomoadua, Footwizard
The jevolar itself — the magic-suppressing field that cloaks Anghysbel — is part of the cage. Where the Formless are held in the Deeps, and the Nagulib are bound in a prison of their own, the Kurja are kept in a place where their own sorcery cannot reach and where their masters cannot easily contact them. When the Enshadowed mounted expeditions into Anghysbel during the events of Footwizard, their purpose was precisely this: to contact, and if possible liberate, the Kurja on behalf of the vassals of the Formless.
