The Lost Egg

Artifact

The encysted, viable, long-lost egg of a Celestial Mother. Its discovery by Minalan in the late books was the leverage that ended the Vundel's casual control of Callidore's humani magi -- and the working hypothesis at the heart of his "plan to save the world."

The Lost Egg is the singular Vundel artefact at the centre of the late saga. It is the encysted, viable, long-lost egg of a Celestial Mother — one of the great matriarchs of the Vundel race, whose direct line had been thought extinct for ages. Recovery of the Lost Egg, in Vundel theology, is roughly equivalent to recovering a missing prophet: it would re-establish a line of authority the species had assumed permanently broken.

What was thought

The Vundel had spent untold centuries assuming the Lost Egg destroyed. The mention of it had become taboo among the most senior Vundel diplomats; Antherose reacts with visible horror when Moudrost first repeats the rumour to him. The Sau'libik audit of Preceptor was, in part, an attempt to verify whether Moudrost had been deceived by the rumour or had actually gone mad in passing it.

What is known

Minalan confirmed publicly to the Sau'libik audit that:

  • The Lost Egg has been found.
  • It is encysted (in stasis).
  • It is viable (a living embryo, not a relic).
  • Minalan personally knows where it is and has seen it.
  • Minalan will not surrender the location to the Vundel under threat.

And yet it is found. Where and how it was found are of no consequence. But it has been found.

Strategic significance

The Lost Egg is the leverage Minalan uses to shift the Vundel-humani relationship from tenant-and-landlord to peer-and-peer. The Vundel cannot risk damaging the Egg, which means they cannot risk damaging Minalan or the Magelaw while he holds the location. The same threat applies to anyone Minalan decides to inherit the secret: the leverage is durable and inheritable so long as the Egg remains hidden and viable.

Minalan also implies that the Egg is part of his "plan to save the world" — a phrase he uses in passing during the Sau'libik confrontation, gestured at but not elaborated. Whether the Egg is meant to be returned to the Vundel as part of a future settlement, hatched on the humani timeline, or simply held permanently in reserve is one of the long-running questions of the saga.

Location

The location remains undisclosed in canon, with the canonical Mancour reading being that Minalan personally knows it and a very small circle of his most trusted confidants (likely Pentandra, possibly Lilastien, possibly the Handmaiden in the Magolith) share the knowledge. The Junebug's deep-water capability is part of how Minalan has been able to visit the site without leaving a trail anyone else can follow.
