Intelligence Master, Constable, Spy

Spellmonger

One of the warmages active on the frontier during the initial goblin crisis. Encounters Minalan in the early stages of the conflict. His combat magic ability is clear from his first appearances, though he is not yet the fully-formed Knight Magi he will become.

Warmage

Active Knight Magi and combat mage during the major engagements of the Goblin War. Participates in the significant battles of the campaign and is part of the warmage community that coalesces around Minalan's growing leadership. His fighting ability and direct approach complement the more strategically-minded members of the group.

Magelord

Combat mage at the Battle of Cambrian Castle and participant in the broader defense of Sevendor against West Fleria. Continues as a reliable field combatant within the Order. His cousin Curmor fights alongside him in some engagements.

Knights Magi

Active Knight Magi in field operations. Takes part in the major engagements of the period, continuing to serve as a capable and dependable combat mage within Minalan's Order.

High Mage

Active field mage during the Nemovorti operations. One of the Order's reliable combat operatives in a period of heightened danger.

Journeymage

Continues active service as Knight Magi during Minalan's absence. His combat skills keep him in field operations.

Enchanter

Present at Sevendor and the Magic Fair as a veteran Knight Magi. Long service in the Order's battles has made him a seasoned and dependable presence.

Court Wizard

Serves as a veteran Knight Magi, undertaking missions and lending his considerable magical skill to the Order's ongoing campaigns against the gurvani threat.

Shadowmage

Active as a Knight Magi field operative, lending his skills to the Order's campaigns in Enultramar and the broader war against the Dead God's forces.

Necromancer

Lends his scholarly skills and field experience to the Order's ongoing operations, contributing to both intelligence-gathering and magical research efforts that support Minalan's work during this book.

Thaumaturge

Mavone serves as Constable of the Magelaw and the Order's chief intelligence officer in Thaumaturge. His network of agents and informants provides Minalan and Terleman with crucial intelligence about goblin movements and the Dead God's plans. His deep scholarly knowledge of goblin magic and gurvani society makes him uniquely qualified to anticipate enemy actions. Mavone's contributions are largely behind the scenes β€” arranging supply lines, ferreting out traitors, and mapping the enemy's capabilities β€” but they are essential to the Magelaw's survival. His transition from field warmage to spymaster and administrator reflects the Order's maturation from a band of fighters into a governing institution.

Arcanist

Mavone's role as Master of Intelligence becomes increasingly important in Arcanist as the political and military landscape grows more complex. Operating in the shadows of the Magelaw's wars, he gathers information on enemies, allies, and the movements of Enshadowed agents. His sharp mind and network of informants keep Minalan one step ahead in a conflict where knowledge can be as decisive as any spell.

Footwizard

Mavone plays a key organizational role before Minalan's expedition, providing crucial intelligence briefings and firmly setting a nine-week deadline for the journey to Anghysbel. He is designated "Nightwort" in Pentandra's Garden Society intelligence network. Mavone stays behind in the Magelaw, continuing his intelligence oversight duties and ensuring that the political and military situation remains stable during the Spellmonger's absence.

Hedgewitch

Mavone works alongside Astyral in advancing the Gilmoran political movement during this period. He is present at Vanador during the victory court and continues his role as Minalan's chief of intelligence, managing information operations throughout the Magelaw.

The Mad Mage of Sevendor

Mavone provides intelligence briefings at the war council, updating Minalan and the assembled commanders on the situation at Darkfaller and the disposition of enemy forces. He assists in coordinating the Merwyni campaign and agrees to stay in Moros alongside Astyral to ensure the Merwyni troops honor their withdrawal agreement.

Marshal Arcane

Mavone is part of the war council at Darkfaller, providing critical intelligence briefings on the Nemovorti forces in the fortress. He reports on the strange chemical defenses the Paranchek spiders use and provides key tactical information about the composition of enemy forces. He is included in the full Beryen Council delegation that assembles for the operation, wearing his order baldrics.

Preceptor

Mavone provides critical intelligence briefings at the war council, informing Minalan and Terleman on the state of Darkfaller's defenses and the movements of the Witch Queen Mycin Amana. He reports on the Paranchek spider forces remaining in the fortress and assures the council that the enemy's defenses are at an ebb after the losses at the Battle of Yule. He coordinates the insertion of spy teams into Darkfaller to gather final intelligence before the assault.

Practical Adept

Mavone is present at the Alka Alon council meeting with the other senior magi. He provides intelligence analysis on Sheruel's ongoing purges in the Dark Vale following the war, grimly noting that the returned Dead God appears to be slaughtering the agents of Korbal and the Nemovorti who betrayed him. He is part of the inner circle debating how to respond to the new threats emerging from the Umbra.
