Tanno Amberil

Staff

The high-precision baculus left to Minalan as Stonetrunk the Avalanti adept's legacy. Tanno Amberil sees the arcane octaves more finely than any other staff in Minalan's collection -- it is the instrument that revealed Alya's Sointula-augmented shroud during Vanamin's birth and that allowed Minalan to instrument the Vanador Snowstone spell in real time. Carries residual divine energy from the three-goddess attendance at Vanamin's birth.

Tanno Amberil is the most thaumaturgically-precise baculus in Minalan's personal arsenal. It was bequeathed to him by Stonetrunk, the Avalanti adept whose Anghysbel meeting in Footwizard changed the course of the snowstone-reproduction project. By Minalan's own ranking, only the Snowflake and the awakened Magolith are more powerful magical tools in his possession.

What it does

Tanno Amberil sees the arcane octaves more finely than magesight can manage. Where ordinary scrying spells observe at a coarse resolution, Tanno Amberil:

  • Resolves the discrete energy-nodes within a thaumaturgical shroud rather than the shroud-as-whole.
  • Reveals divine signatures that Imperial thaumaturgy has no protocol for naming.
  • Permits multi-octave spellwork by displaying a working at every relevant frequency simultaneously.
  • Carries hoxter-pocketed instrumentation for fine adjustment during a working.

It was Tanno Amberil that revealed Alya's anomalous chest-node energies during Vanamin's birth — the seething low-level field around her lungs that turned out to be the Sointula talisman augmenting her vivant energy. Without the staff, the snowstone protocol would have failed for the same reasons Minalan's earlier reproduction attempts had failed.

The Vanador Snowstone Event

In the Vanador Snowstone Event the staff served as the working instrumentation: Tanno Amberil monitored the Magolith's power output, the Sointula vivant frequency, the Morath Sigil saturation level, and the divine-flame moment of Briga's pulse, all simultaneously. The working could not have been replicated without this kind of fine-grained measurement.

The staff retained residual divine energy from the three-goddess attendance at the working — a faint aftermath that Minalan exploits in subsequent volumes when divine-class detection is required (notably in Practical Adept when scrying god-touched Farisi clergy).

Recurring use

Tanno Amberil is Minalan's preferred instrumentation staff for the rest of the series. It is not a combat weapon (though it can power them) but a research and scrying tool of unmatched precision. Stonetrunk's legacy.
